While recording and producing an EP for country singer/songwriter Josh Parker, it became apparent that we needed to hire some guitar work done. I soon began combing through my long list of conservatory trained guitarists, wondering how I was going to find that "Nashville" sound in Columbus, OH. While running sound one night, I saw Derek play improvised leads on his telecaster for a songwriter and it was obvious immediately that this was our guy. So many guitarists have chops (and Derek's got those two), but chops don't write great lines and dial in memorable tones - he was doing BOTH... on the fly. Derek's skill and expertise as a songwriter lends itself to his work as a session guitarist through his impeccable understanding of melody, dynamics, and nuance. As producer on the project, it was incredibly easy to collaborate with him artistically, and his response to feedback and direction were of the utmost professional demeanor which made our work together incredibly efficient. In a short 3 hour session, we were able to add leads to 4 tracks - start to finish - and in the end, I have to say that those guitar parts made the record! To top it all off, Derek is one of the most personable and professional people I've ever worked with. Book him for your session - you won't regret it.
