Derek is really informative and knowledgeable in his field! We benefitted greatly after only one session. We don’t have much of a background in marketing, but he was able to describe terms to us which will really help us to advertise our business.

My first experience working with Derek was while he was at the City of Edmonton, Assessment and Taxation branch. Even at that time, I felt he was different from other professionals in that he was genuine in his efforts to help. We resolved some annoying issues that had persisted for years despite my best efforts working with a number of Derek's predecessors. Several years later, I was in the process of building a start-up SaaS business and needed some marketing advice. Derek was happy to share his insights into Inbound marketing and directed me to the agency he was with at the time. I have continued to find value in Derek’s insight. He recently offered some valuable cost-saving advice for producing a video to demo our software. He presented the solution with crispness and clarity. It was the advice that I had been looking for. I intend to stay in contact with Derek and would enthusiastically recommend him as a marketing consultant for any business with an online presence.

I am a professional always, but at this point in my career, my main KPI was ensuring that my daughter was getting a solid start in life. I also helped a few valued clients materialize some real value by helping them to realize that they already had everything they needed in-house to succeed online; I just offered some helpful guidance. Full-Time New Dad

Feb 2020 - Feb 2020
My most recent work was the development and implementation of strategic, Inbound campaigns using HubSpot enterprise tools at Flawless Inbound as a specialized technical Account Manager. I’ve been to HubSpot HQ in Boston for the Account Management Essentials training, and I led the team that earned the Advanced CRM Implementation certification for our agency. I have a crystal-clear understanding of the entire HubSpot COS ecosystem and platform and have watched it grow and evolve over the past five years. I know how to integrate multiple points of data back into HubSpot to get all the necessary reporting in one place. I am hip on the latest in Inbound marketing and automation and can apply many of those same lessons on different CMS or CRM tools. I know how to use these tools to provide a better online user experience in real-time. And then connect that with clever CRM programming (customer relation management) to help businesses provide better customer service. Prior to this, I was the Senior Technical Team lead for our Inbound agency. I can work with HTML and CSS and the entire HubSpot COS. I’ve managed multiple social media accounts for businesses, both personally, and through coordinating creative teams. (And, I have earned media coverage for playing bike polo. Google it). My experience has been consistently varied and challenging. In university, I was the Managing Editor of Earth Common Journal and worked with international writers on peer-reviewed, feature articles on water conservation and sustainability. In my role at the City of Edmonton, Assessment and Taxation branch I appeared regularly in front of quasi-judicial court tribunals to resolve commercial taxation disputes. Through this experience, I’ve learned the value of working with all community stakeholders to always speak true and to build trust. Now, I'm a dad. Life is a grand adventure. : ) Show less

Enterprise Client Account Manager
-
Dec 2018 - Feb 2020
I was leading all strategic Inbound initiatives for a handful of enterprise-level clients. My focus of work was the development and implementation of strategic and comprehensive online campaigns to achieve measurable business goals for our clients. I am proud to say that I was the first (and still only) person to have run the gauntlet of all three roles at this agency: Creative Writer, Technical Team (Lead), and Account Manager. I enjoyed leading my team of creative people to use smart technology to build better customer experiences. Show less

Senior Marketing Technology Manager

Apr 2016 - Dec 2018
Technical Team Lead for Flawless Inbound. I was at one point fully certified in Inbound Marketing through HubSpot academy (most of my certifications can be found on my LinkedIn profile just scroll down). Every day I was developing strategies that focus on educating an audience (rather than selling to them). I am fluent in SEO best practices, (i.e. how to internally link webpages together to form cluster-topics necessary for pillar pages and intent based-search plus a basic understanding natural language processing). I know the HubSpot COS/CMS cold, I enjoy landing page design, setting lead-scoring criteria, website interface (UI), and connecting together the entire buyer journey (UX). And, depending on what tools were available I could help add some automation/workflows (if/then logic for emails, tasks, etc.) into websites to enhance the user experience, add a human feel to interactions with technology, and connect to a sales/support team in real team. This was fun. I maintained websites, built landing pages, tinkered with marketing and sales automation, prepared lead profiling logic, and published content. Show less

Creative Web Content Writer
-
Sep 2015 - Apr 2016
My role was to make websites a little more friendly, and a lot smarter, using clever content delivered at the right time, to the right persona/audience. I crafted online experiences to educate, to persuade, to sell, and above all, to make people happy. I know how to structure and stage content to match the needs of an audience seeking information. I managed social media accounts and supervised others to do the same.

I also managed the social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, Google+). I was asked to help build this company following my work with the team at the SEO-based lead generation start-up company, JustLaw. I provided support and direction for contributing writers and our videographer. I grew the Twitter audience of @goodleafsupply from 0 to over 6,000 followers in under six months using various analytic and distribution tools. Show less

Freelance Writer

Feb 2014 - 2015
I began my freelance writing career with Just Law, an SEO based lead generation company. My role in this company was to research the Criminal Code of Canada and prepare search engine optimized service pages for the websites of criminal law firms in Alberta and Saskatchewan. The areas of practice included Administrative Tribunals, Agricultural Law, Civil Disputes, Constructive Dismissal, Contract Review, Hit and Run Accidents, Workplace Harassment, Medical Malpractice, Personal Injury Law, etc. I have written hundreds of pages for this company and before I left I was told I am “the only copywriter they will work with and recommend.” It was through my hard work with Just Law that I was invited to be one of the founding shareholders of Goodleaf.com. Dental Clinic Copywriting: I have prepared online content for the dental implant services of General Dentists. I’ve enjoyed the challenges of writing detailed content that adheres to the advertising regulations of the Alberta Dental Association and College. I am comfortable meeting with clients directly and obtaining the detailed information required to complete the marketing project in accordance with the client’s vision. PixelNerd Keith Olsen, owner of PixelNerd contacted me after Jag Grewal (Just Law) recommended me. I wrote the words for his company website and Keith later asked me to contribute to his marketing blog on PixelNerd.ca. I was flattered to be asked to guest blog for a marketing firm. The digitals tools, strategies, and tactics for online marketing are always being better adapted and I made every effort to stay current on industry trends through ongoing education with courses from Lynda.com and HubSpot. Nyche Marketing I have worked with Nyssa Cromwell, owner of Nyche Marketing, on a couple of different marketing projects with different clients. While I was freelancing, she advised me to expand my business, hire out young writers and to teach them to do what I do. Show less
