    • Ti64 FAST-forging - SURE Research Project at The University of Sheffield
      • Jul 2019 - Aug 2019

A 6-week long research project on the bonding and feasibility of powder-to-solid sintering of Ti-6Al-4V. The research was focused on the production and subsequent analysis of the effects on the bond phase microstructure between a previously FAST-ed sample (Field Assisted Sintering Technology) and newly laid powder; alternating sub and super-transus temperature layers. Thorough sample preparation was later carried out to allow analysis by SEM and Optical Microscopy. The research also focused on mechanical (Charpy and Tensile) testing of samples from an externally produced large billet, to determine the effects of different cooling rates between the billet's centre and its outer rim, and whether this could affect mechanical performance and microstructure.

    • Intern
      • Jun 2020 - Sep 2020

Worked as a full-time intern in the aluminium refining plant with the chance to further my academic knowledge on metals with daily contact with an industrial production line.I have had the privilege to observe nearly all aspects of production, including arrival and departure of material, pre-processing, melting and pouring, and waste treatment. I have also carried out my own experiments, collected and interpreted data to reach a final conclusion. This was a great opportunity to observe materials science in action, but also to be able to contribute with knowledge gathered during the many extensive research projects undertaken during the previous university years. These included skills such as planning and execution of experiments, as well as determining possible improvements to both testing procedures and also the larger production process.I am pleased to have also learnt immensely from this experience, both academically and scientifically, but also regarding good business practices, logistics, legislature and systems management. These are all aspects that I was missing as a student and, I think, only real time spent on the ground, in industry, can offer the wider perspective needed to leave part of the rigidness of an academic environment behind. Thanks to the long history of the company, I have also had the chance to visit over 25 other industrial plants of suppliers, clients and collaborators, to observe more industrial processes than an eager materials scientist could ever dream of, such as: aluminum ingot and billet production, extrusion and rolling, steel manufacturing with continuous casting techniques, fuse cast refractory production, plastic and scrap metal waste separation and recycling, waste incineration, glass and cement manufacturing, low and high-pressure die casting, and technical gas production.
