Global Thought Experience/Research Intern
-
Oct 2017 - Aug 2018
Over the past year, I have worked with the Queer Detainee Empowerment Project (QDEP) as a research intern to advocate for the Dignity not Detention Bill (DND), a piece of legislation originally passed in California, which aims to monitor and ultimately abolish the use of private immigration detention throughout New York state. As a QDEP research intern, I work closely with the executive director to shape legislation by providing information concerning possible political sponsors, coordinating with outside organizations, investigating the conditions within for-profit detention centers (especially as it pertains to LGBTQ+ individuals), and understanding the means through which local governments may adjust their budgets to enhance accountability for complicity within a system of criminalization. Through coordination with organizations Freedom for Immigrants and Immigration Legal Resource Center, I am drafting and editing a new DND bill based on the framework of the original legislation found in California. _______ This opportunity was acquired through The Global Thought Experience (GTE), an experiential learning initiative sponsored by the Columbia Committee on Global Thought. The program enables Columbia undergraduate students to use knowledge and skills learned in the classroom to address issues affecting the community in Global New York. Through this program, I have had the opportunity to not only discuss my experiences at monthly on-campus meetings but also present my work at QDEP through an end-of-year reception. Show less

Development Intern

Jan 2017 - May 2017
Established in 1991, Asian American Writers' Workshop (AAWW) is a national not-for-profit arts organization devoted to the creating, publishing, developing and disseminating of creative writing by Asian Americans–in other words, they're the preeminent organization dedicated to the belief that Asian American stories deserve to be told. At AAWW, I worked at as a development intern who was responsible for updating the donation database with new incoming funds. Moreover, I assisted the development staff with grant writing and research- both vital skills in a non-profit environment. In particular, I focused on logistical support and aided in fundraising for high school/senior center writing programs through contacting private grant providers, researching demographic information, and coordinating with community organizations.
