I met Delia in the 1980s in Brussels when I was working for a multinational security organization. I recall our many conversations about security issues. When we next met in Geneva some twenty years on, Delia had founded Graines de Paix. I was not in the least surprised. The Graines de Paix Foundation fills a gap for responding to the risks of violence that, already at the time, loomed far too large. There was a rising incidence of intra-state conflicts, presenting ever more challenging situations for parents and their children, to which traditional development approaches had little or no reply. Graines de Paix’s education work is right on. The world is increasingly at risk if children’s education is not enlarged to include the values and skills for preventing conflict, violence and extremism. Donor policies need to be calibrated accordingly. Teachers and parents need enriched forms of training and coaching to help them best develop these skills in children and, of course, in themselves. Children in many parts of the world now require tools to help them navigate the horrific realities that conflict leaves in its wake. They need to learn how to put an ongoing conflict situation in perspective – be it at school and more broadly in the community. They need to learn how to reach out to others whose suffering can be assuaged by an expression of caring and acts of vital support. Most importantly, education is the broadest means to form and mobilize young audiences and their communities to resolve conflict-caused suffering. Graines de Paix has been on the forefront of efforts to move Western development policy in this direction. It should be recognized accordingly.

Merci Delia

Delia Mamon is a recognised changemaker for her work in transforming education by uniting 3 social impacts: raising the quality of education for all students, preventing violence and radicalization, and fostering a peace climate in schools and in society. For this, she has designed a comprehensive dialog-based pedagogy called Full Quality Education. She founded Graines de Paix in 2005, which since 2012 helps Ministries of Education and teachers achieve education reform. Her innovative contributions to Quality Education were rewarded by the Smart Peace Prize to Graines de Paix in 2019 and by Ashoka as Impact laureate in 2014. In 2020, she was one of the Education experts invited to address ICESCO.Her vision of Full Quality Education encompasses the human, social and discernment skills that boost self-esteem, mutual appreciation between students and appreciation of nature as the means to foster societal cohesion, environmental care and the enjoyment of learning. From the start, her efforts have been on how to prevent violence, focusing on human values and competencies that help children feel considered, valued and interested in meaningfulness. She leads the production of Guidebooks for teachers and students that bring emotional and reflective learning via experiential activities for school subjects. These include the 4 volumes of the "Growing up in peace" collection (LEP ed.), recommended by most Swiss-French cantons; "Leon and his emotions" the emotional intelligence school exhibition; 35 workshops for school inclusiveness (Hatier) and a program for welcoming schools.National agreements with the Education Ministries of Côte d'Ivoire, Benin, Senegal, Lebanon, Tunisia have followed. She has also been speaker in these countries as well as in Algeria, Palestine, France and the UN, and is an honorary member of GAPEF, (women for peace and education in Burkina Faso). Her education concepts can be found on social media and on Graines de Paix's Web pages.
