I worked with students one-on-one and in small groups on writing, reading, grammar, spelling, and social studies assignments. I also provided coverage in classrooms throughout the school for grades 2-8 when classroom teachers or reading and math specialists were out sick or in meetings. I facilitate a hands-on science class for young girls grades 1st through 7th. I am responsible for creating my own weekly lesson plans as well as collaborating with other staff members to create a fun and engaging environment for the girls. This past summer I facilitated activities ranging from extracting strawberry DNA to assembling solar cars on a daily basis. Currently my class is titled "Chemistry is Cool," and this semester my focus has been fostering a positive attitude towards science in the girls as well as introducing them to scientific vocabulary that they will use throughout school. My hope is that I can embody the Girls' Inc. mission to, "inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold," especially when it comes to science. Show less

While working as a research assistant in the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education I have gained many valuable skills. I now have experience conducting literature reviews using databases such as Google Scholar and PsychInfo. I am proficient at entering data into Excel as well as working with a team of other undergraduate researchers to complete miscellaneous research tasks. Last spring we conducted interviews of middle school students as a part of a study on STEM education at the local Boys and Girls Club. Interviewing middle school students really opened my eyes to their world and made me want to become an activist for their education. This research motivated me to apply to be a STEM facilitator at Girl's Inc.. In this position I also gained experience working with a graduate student to complete reports on several STEM grant programs. In these reports I assisted with qualitative data coding, creating statistical tables using Excel, and transcribing interviews using NVivo. Show less

In this position I had an incredible experience working with young people with disabilities. Forming bonds with the campers as well as the other interns was both rewarding and inspiring. Getting to work with the campers and help them reach small goals such as taking the bus or completing a dance routine was a truly humbling experience.
