Deborah Myers first approached me following my appearance speaking on a panel about Women in Fundraising/Leadership at an IoF Culture Sector Network conference. I recall it was International Women’s Day and suddenly I was asked by one of the most powerful women in the room if I could mentor her. I was both confused and humbled as to why me but Deborah knew exactly what she wanted to learn. What followed was the growth of a very supportive and productive peer mentoring relationship that continues to this day as colleagues with other leaders on an Action Learning Set. Deborah is quite simply one of the most extraordinary women I’ve met in the arts. Her role as Development Director with a team of 27 at the National Gallery had me totally awestruck but it was so clear she had wider skills beyond fundraising too which others will no doubt benefit from in her latest move to a freelance career. From fundraising to leadership and strategy and everything in between she sees and holds the bigger picture and the tiny details equally well. And if I ever had an issue that kept me awake at night then Deborah would always be one of those at the top of my list to talk things through with. She has acute insight. She’s perceptively challenging, immensely knowledgeable and deeply kind. And she is always very clear about what she wants. I’m so glad she cornered me at that conference as I very much appreciate having her in my network and would recommend her to anyone in a flash.

It was fantastic to work with Deborah, who is an exceptional fundraising professional. She is a strategic thinker who is able to see the bigger picture, but at the same time, her hands-on approach to leadership enables her to develop loyal, efficient team-working. She would be an asset to any organisation.
