When I worked in the ICU-I carried out ICU skills in addition to basic nursing skills. I cared for patients on the ventilator, post heart caths, post-traumatic injuries, ICU drips, etc.. While working on the telemetry floor, I found I needed to improve my organizational and time management skills. I was used to doing a very thorough assessment of my 2-3 patients in ICU; making time to ensure I had a rapport with the patient and/or family. I found that when I worked on the telemetry floor, I usually had 5-6 patients with 1-2 discharges a night and 1-2 admits. I couldn't spend as much time on my assessments of patients and with developing a rapport with the patient and their family. (I found that things usually went much smoother when a rapport was developed.) My director and charge nurse helped me accomplish the organizational and time management skills that I was lacking. I did improve, but couldn't always achieve 100% in reaching these self-improvement skills. Also at Baptist, it was required to take additional educational classes that I didn't have to at other hospitals; Stroke one and two, Passing and keeping current on the NIH Stroke Scale Certification, de-escalation techniques, PALS, Post-administration of opioids monitoring (to monitor for early s/s of oversedation and take action, when necessary, In addition, many other classes were required, (along with keeping current with nursing skills, BLS, ACLS, BON requirements, etc Since I stopped working in ICU, I could no longer be CCRN certified-I didn't have enough hours in ICU to re-certify. I did learn and my nursing skills grew with all the educational classes taken and they all came in use during my time at BBH. Show less
