Litigation/Family Paralegal
-
Aug 2018 - Feb 2019
Initially 6 weeks of work experience before working in an official capacity as a Paralegal 2 days a week. I assisted solicitors with preparing documents for bundles. This included drafting witness statements (including taking client meetings with a supervising solicitor to draft the witness statement with the client) and position statements, as well as Notices for Acting and paginating documents. I also wrote letters to clients informing them of updates to their cases and filed divorce and finance petitions at the Central Family Court. I aided solicitors by making phone calls to arrange contact centre appointments and to check the status of Legal Aid applications, and conducting legal research for solicitors and secretaries. I additionally performed general administrative tasks, such as photocopying, faxing, scanning and printing documents, taking phone calls at reception and organising client files. I also assisted with financial administrative tasks, including logging chitties for monies relating to property fees, writing cheques and organising and preparing relevant documents in files to be sent to a Cost Draftsman. I have also been trained to use the ALB Practice Management System.I gained court experience when attending court as a clerk for the firm on two occasions. I attended Counsel's interview with the client and took notes on the matters discussed, as well as watching a police interview with Counsel and the client. I also attended the court hearing later in the day, of which I took notes and heard witness testimony. At the conclusion of the hearing, I then updated the paralegal responsible for the case on the developments and what the Instructing Solicitors and client needed to do next.
