It was a privilege to work as an intern for 6 months at the Veteran's Home of California. I was responsible for co-leading, leading, and observing various groups. These groups included: Stretching for Health (exercise group that utilized music and exercise tools), Drumming group, Instrumental and Vocal Groups, and Serenaders (music therapy group that involved residents playing individual instruments while the music therapist led the music, rhythm, vocal exercises and powerpoint). In addition; I also started the following groups: Music with Memory Care (specialized collection of music that targeted residents with cognitive difficulties), Songwriting with Section (group that wrote 3 themed songs and learned various songwriting techniques), and Drumming Workshop (4 week workshop open to all sections at the Veteran's Home). My internship responsibilities also included working with at least 3 individual residents with varying levels of functioning. I worked with 5 individual residents with low to high levels of functioning. As part of my treatment plan; I assessed each resident, established goals and objectives, designed and implemented session plans, wrote progress notes, collected data, and wrote conclusions and recommendations on each individual. Additionally; I also wrote a case study, engaged in bedside visits with residents, designed and managed a quality assurance survey, and conducted a research pilot study on a songwriting group. While working as an intern at the Veteran's Home I also learned the value of non-musical experiences and groups. I worked with the Drill Team (a group of residents in electronic wheelchairs) on various routines and led the group through the Yountville Days Parade. I also worked with the Ceramics group in collaboration with the Art Therapist in order to assist residents with creating, painting, and drawing various projects.Overall, the experience with the Veterans and staff was valuable, insightful and inspiring. The experience of designing my own session plan to meet the needs of the clients was very rewarding and insightful. I also enjoyed learning how to conduct various types of music therapy assessments and implementing treatment plans according to population. Since I was able to work with such a diverse range of diagnoses and ages, my comfort level working with any population is strong. Show more Show less
