I truly love it when people I deeply admire and respect ask me to write a letter of recommendation for them. Dean Hommer is one of those people. I met Dean when he came to replace me as CMO at William Beaumont Army Medical Center. Unlike many of the other candidates that I met, it was immediately clear that he was different. While many were just checking a box on their way to something "better," Dean took the job to heart. I could tell that he was going to personally feel every bad outcome, and wanted to learn everything as quickly as he could in order to make positive change in the organization. He proved to be a fast learner, and was running circles around me in a matter of months. He was innovative, hard working, and most of all, his heart and soul was truly in the job. I won't be surprised if Dean has multiple job offers before I finish this recommendation; I hope that I am fortunate enough to work with him or someone of his stellar caliber again in the future.

Chief Medical Officer
-
Oct 2018 - Apr 2020
Chief Medical Officer, president of the medical staff, and senior medical advisor of an Army Medical Center with multiple GME programs and over 1500 medical staff. Responsible for the execution of high-quality and cost-efficient medical care. Oversee credentialing and compliance with Medical Staff Bylaws, policies and procedures, committee procedures, and licensure and accreditation guidance. Work with and mentor physicians and medical staff to improve performance by fostering a culture of collaboration and trust to improve patient outcomes and medical staff workplace satisfaction. Serve as a member of the hospital executive team, collaborating with other physician executives and senior leaders to develop and expand services, recruit physicians, and provide clinical guidance for safe and excellent medical care. Accomplishments: After inheriting a preliminary denial of accreditation, within a year of arriving, led the WBAMC team to a commendable TJC accreditation with no high-risk findings and the TJC surveyors noting several best practices. Transformed the clinical oversight process to quickly assess WBAMC’s compliance with TJC standards, which also signaled to WBAMC personnel, the emphasis on TJC compliance. This contributed to rapidly improving the quality and safety culture in the organization. As Chair, Credentials Committee and Medical Staff Executive Committee (MSEC), completely overhauled the Peer Review process to ensure WBAMC had a good understanding of the performance of every provider in every venue of care. This resulted in zero findings and a citation of “best practice” during the Medical Staff review portion of the TJC survey. In this setting of improved quality and safety, increased the outpatient patient satisfaction to over 94%, an increase of almost 10%. Increased the inpatient satisfaction to 76%, an increase of over 5%. Show less
