We are a social housing provider to circa 10,000 properties in the East Midlands. My current role is to manage our Health, Safety and Environment Systems. Following ever increasing scrutiny of Health, Safety and the Environment, I sought and gained approval from senior management to work towards gaining ISO 45001. Following months of preparation to upgrade our previous systems, we successfully gained certification to this internationally accredited standard in May 2019. One of the key components to achieving this I felt was working with a positive culture of staff, management, directors and board members. Other areas of the role include management of our ISO 14001 environmental management system, induction training for new starters, providing advice and guidance on all HSE matters, leading on our lone working management software and equipment, undertaking fire risk assessments and management of actions. I also play a key role in the quarterly Health, Safety and Environment Forum (represented by all areas of the organisation) and Incident Team (review and management of database holding risk data of problematic/vulnerable tenants). My aim in this role is not only to maintain and improve our existing systems but also work closer with all levels of staff and management, to ensure our commitment to continually improve. I am also a strong believer in empowering teams to manage their own HSE, with me becoming the advisory coach to assist and support. Show less

This company specialised in providing renal dialysis treatment and equipment to a number of clinics around the country. My role was to support clinical units to ensure workplace safety was paramount. The role was typical to what was expected of a HSE advisor. It involved workplace audits and reporting of findings to management, providing advise and guidance with a big emphasis on reviewing of risk assessments including hazardous substances and manual handling. Fire risk management also played a key part where I was tasked with reviewing each clinics to ensure compliance. Show less

The role involved a significant amount of management of the ISO 14001 system as well as the ISO 9001 Quality Management System. A requisite for this was internal auditing to ensure compliance with procedures and systems. I successfully put together the application to ROSPA that subsequently led to the company receiving a Gold Award in Health and Safety. I also delivered inductions to new starters that included environmental awareness. Show less

    • Health and Safety Advisor
      • Mar 2011 - Mar 2012

This was my first role where I took the lead in managing the organisations health and safety responsibilities. The company itself was an arms-length organisation attached to the borough council. Its responsibility being the management of 6000+ homes in the Charnwood area. The role of H&S Advisor was a newly created role with a 12 month contract. This entailed me building up a health and safety management system for the business with a significant emphasis of fire risk management of the properties. This required me to work alongside all levels of management, firstly to ensure they were aware of their specific responsibilities but also to bring our properties in line to meet fire regulations. Further activities involved training all levels of management and coordinating the risk assessment process. This was the role that really began to define my future as I gained valuable experience in leading in Health and Safety. Show less

My introduction into the world of health and safety and what an environment to learn your trade. This was a development role where overtime I gained my IOSH Managing Safely, NEBOSH General Certificate and Diploma in Safety, Health and Environmental Management. The role itself saw me lead on managing the process of PPE inspections on fire stations and undertaking audits also within these locations with station managers. This also involved report writing and feeding the findings to the quarterly health and safety committee that was attended by management, reps and unions. I was also tasked with presenting health and safety awareness at induction stage to fire fighters and non operational staff. Various networking sessions with other regional fire and rescue services were fairly prominent too where by I would speak of good practice and matters arising. I also delivered in house courses to newly qualified crew managers advising them of their H&S responsibilities. Show less
