Umoja, (a Kiswahili word meaning unity) is a community and critical resource dedicated to enhancing the cultural and educational experiences of African American and other students. We believe that when the voices and histories of students are deliberately and intentionally recognized, the opportunity for self-efficacy emerges and a foundation is formed for academic success. Umoja actively serves and promotes student success for all students through a curriculum and pedagogy responsive to the legacy of the African and African American Diasporas. As the Regional Coordinator, my responsibility is to support the Los Angeles Region Umoja programs across the community college system and build an intentional relationship with the UC system to increase African American Student Enrollment.

Starting as an idea in a college apartment, ReCES is the brainchild of Kevyn and Kristin Lewis. Noticing a lack of hands-on education throughout all levels of school, Kevyn and Kristin set out to provide the learning experience that only hands-on activities can give. We believe that everyone has a place in this world. As the Coordinator of Health and Wellness it is my pleasure to educate the youth on holistic health and ensure the activities at the Resource Center promote good health. I have one of the most fulfilling jobs in the world. I go to local high schools and middle schools and encourage students to pursue higher education. Along with exposing these students to higher education, my coworkers and I also provide cultural support for the scholars. I have one of the most fulfilling jobs in the world.
