Daniela is a phenomenal colleague! In her role at the University of Dayton, she has enthusiastically contributed to the work team, and encouraged healthy work habits. Her organizational skills and creativity have streamlined processes in the Center, and she is consistently assessing the effectiveness of her programming. She has built a space for students to be supported not only academically, but in a holistic way, providing resources and tools for people to build their own skills. Daniela is an excellent collaborator, building innovative programming with campus partners that directly address the needs and inquiries of her audience.

There are individuals I have come across in my life whose actions inspire me to live with purpose, encourage me to accomplish my goals, and propel me to make a meaningful impact within my work and larger society. Daniela Canas Baena is one of these people. I had the good fortune of knowing Daniela as a student, serving as her supervisor as she transitioned into the workforce, and I am proud to say that she is now a trusted colleague. I was so impressed by her maturity, professionalism, infectious optimism, and dedication to building a more inclusive campus that I advocated for her stay on board with the College. Daniela was an important force of stability, strength, and leadership during a significant amount of transition and crisis within the organization. Daniela demonstrated a deep passion for elevating the experience of students and staff from underrepresented and marginalized identity groups. Daniela’s strengths are centered around her cheerful leadership style, resourcefulness, listening, advocacy, critical thinking, and project management skills. All of these strengths are founded in a deep value of the dignity of individuals and communities of people, especially communities who have been historically marginalized. Additionally, she has strong coaching and counseling skills. Daniela served on the on-call crisis management team, and handled each emergency with care, support, an unflappable demeanor, and professionalism. Her approach was grounded in a confidence and humility that permeates throughout her interpersonal communication and relationships. She offered resources for immediate and long-term strategies for individuals who were navigating difficult circumstances. One of the major areas that Daniela took leadership in was initiating our first field placement for Master of Social Work interns at Scripps College, which allowed for MSW graduate students to provide coaching and advising services to students at no cost to our organization. Daniela assisted me with coordinating logistics for onboarding the interns and provision of ongoing training. Daniela’s compassion, enthusiasm, and purpose for helping others is grounded in a genuineness that has been refreshing and invigorating.
