    • Facilities Engineer and Project Manager
      • Jun 2014 - Jul 2020

I am a former Facilities Engineer and Project Manager for Oxy in a region in West Texas. In this position, I was responsible for two primary roles: 1) designing and managing the construction of multi-million dollar facilities capable of safely transporting produced fluids from wellhead to sales pipeline and 2) replacing equipment that had either failed or required frequent maintenance. All projects required detailed cost-benefit analysis to determine the ROI and payback period as well as a presentation of the proposal to management for approval of funds. In this position, I learned how to effectively collaborate with the automation, construction, electrical, and operations groups to generate successful projects from the ground up. This role took me to the job location in West Texas 1-3 times per month and I spent hundreds of days in the field managing construction projects, troubleshooting operational issues, hosting field meetings, and facilitating startups. I was fortunate to work for a company that values young engineers spending time in the field, and I gained a very tangible understanding of a project's construction cycle. The role not only taught me the technical skills required of a Facilities Engineer, but also the soft skills required as a Project Manager. As a Facilities Engineer, I troubleshooted problems with pumps, pipelines, tanks, pressure vessels (separators), and compressors. Each trip to the field, I asked as many questions as I could to the automation, construction, and electrical techs. As a young Project Manager, the most important thing I learned was to ask, not tell, and make frequent calls or field meetings with cross-functional personnel to make sure all disciplines are collaborating with one another to achieve success as a team.
