David retired from Avec at the end of August 2017 following 4 years as Avec's senior partner for leadership and governance where he lead the service provison to schools and academies. During his time at Avec, David supported the strategic and operational governance arrangements at a range of Local Authority schools, Academy Trusts and Multi Academy Trusts across the north of England. In 2016 David was asked to join Sir David Carter's DfE expert group in developing A Competency Framework for Governance. He also helped to develop the curent DfE framework for School/Academy clerks.

Whilst working as an independent consultant, David supported N Yorks CC & the MOD as Project Officer: Service Children's Transition, undertook an evaluation of Newcastle City Council's School Improvement Partner support programme and undertook a range of project management work for schools converting to Academy status. David was Project Director at Partnership for Schools from 2005-2008 and during this time he worked as PD with Coventry, Manchester and many LAs in the north of England. David has an extensive background in educational senior management at local authority and school level. He has a depth of experience of working within the public sector to support the strategic development of Children’s Services and helped to establish the first Children’s Services department at Darlington BC whilst Assistant Director (School Improvement). He has had operational responsibility for the development and deployment of school improvement services in several local authorities. David began his career as a teacher in Warwickshire and during his career has held a range of senior management posts across a range of school types, culminating in the headships of 3 successful schools in Warwickshire and East Yorkshire.
