My book, The Story of Ain't, was published in 2012 (starred review in PW; reviewed in AP, NYT, WSJ, WashPo, among others) and issued in paperback in 2013. Member of the usage panel of American Heritage Dictionary from 2004 until 2018, when it was disbanded.   Staff editor. I edited articles in all sections of the magazine. As a contributor, I specialized in cultural reportage, book reviews, and first-person essays. Continued as a contributor, after taking a new job at the National Endowment for the Humanities, through the end of 2018. Wrote one of the last cover stories ever published by this important magazine of politics and culture.
