As a Senior Associate Solicitor in the International and Group Litigation Department I work on international human rights and environmental claims against multinational corporations.I am presently the Lead Solicitor of the firm’s Volvo ‘Dieselgate’ claims. I manage a large team which represents over 18,000 claimants who are seeking compensation from Volvo, authorised finance companies and authorised dealerships. I also have conduct of a number of other cases in the sphere of business and human rights, particularly in the agribusiness sector, which are at an investigatory stage and not yet public.I continue to assist Daniel Leader with efforts to advocate for a remedy for our clients in AAA & Others v Unilever PLC and Unilever Tea Kenya Limited after their claims were dismissed by the Court of Appeal in 2019. I worked as an Associate Solicitor where I assisted on international human rights claims against multinational corporations and cases against the British government in respect of overseas torts. I worked on a wide variety of cases, work highlights include:- Assisted Daniel Leader as the Lead Solicitor with conduct of the successful claims of 85 Kenyans who alleged that they suffered severe injuries after being beaten by security guards employed by Kakuzi Plc, a large agribusiness in the area in which the claimants lived. The claims were resolved with Kakuzi’s parent company, Camellia Plc.- Assisted Sapna Malik with the preparation for, and trial of, the second group of successful claims to go to trial in Alseran & Ors v Ministry of Defence [2017] EWHC 3289 (QB). The December 2017 Judgment held that the Ministry of Defence implemented a flawed and unlawful approach to the detention of civilians during the Iraq war, breaching not only the Human Rights Act but also the Geneva Conventions. The Court also ruled that British soldiers subjected Iraqi civilians to inhuman and degrading treatment.- Assisted Daniel Leader and Matthew Renshaw on the successful claims of 273 Mozambicans who alleged that they, or their relatives, were the victims of serious human rights abuses at or around Montepuez Ruby Mining Limitada’s (MRM’s) mine in northern Mozambique (a joint venture in which Gemfields is the majority stakeholder).- Assisted Daniel Leader and Matthw Renshaw on the successful claims of 71 claimants who alleged that they suffered serious human rights abuses by security personnel employed or contracted by the Williamson Diamond Mine and by police who work at and around the Williamson Diamond Mine. - Assisted Daniel Leader with the claimants’ application before the Court of Appeal in AAA & Others v Unilever PLC and Unilever Tea Kenya Limited [2018] EWCA Civ 1532. I worked as a paralegal in the International & Group Claims at Leigh Day where I assisted on international, human rights and environmental claims against multinational corporations and cases against the British government in respect of overseas torts. During this period I worked on a wide variety of cases, work highlights include:- Assisted Martyn Day and Daniel Leader on the successful Mau Mau claims against the British Government in which compensation was obtain on behalf of 5,228 Kenyan victims of colonial torture who alleged that they were subjected to torture and other forms of ill-treatment at the hands of the British colonial administration during the Kenya Emergency in the 1950’s. I worked on both of the successful Preliminary Hearings and formed part of the team that led Leigh Day’s investigations in Kenya in 2012 and 2013.- Assisted Sapna Malik on the successful civil claims of Iraqi civilians against the British Ministry of Defence for alleged assaults, unlawful detention, inhuman and degrading treatment, torture and executions by British forces in Iraq between 2003 and 2009.- Assisted Martyn Day and Daniel Leader on the successful claims of 15,000 Nigerian fishermen and women against Shell Petroleum for the alleged environmental damage suffered by their community as a result of two large oil spills.
