My role centered on preserving DNA samples used to demonstrate paternal care among baboons. Eventually I was tasked with isolating DNA to perform paternity tests. Our lab was researching an unusual pattern of paternal care in the Amboseli region of Kenya, where male baboons were helping to raise their offspring. Our lab was assessing the role of collagen receptors in thrombi formations using transgenic mice. My role was to confirm that the transgenic mouse contained the human gene of interest. After identifying the relevant gene in the DNA sequence and then ordering primers needed for PCR, I would conduct PCR and gel electrophoresis, then interpret and report the results.
