Project title: Artificial Intelligence, Automation And Job Content: The Implication For Wages, Job Mobility And TrainingSupervisor: Prof. Christina GathmannFunding: Grant FNR-AFRAbstract: What is the impact of artificial intelligence on jobs, wages and the risk of unemployment? While in the past, software and robots have replaced middle-skill workers performing specific routine tasks, artificial intelligence has demonstrated its potential to automate both routine and non-routine tasks in a wide range of occupations and sectors. As economic theories argue that AI also has positive impacts on the labor market and on consumers, this new technology induces deep changes in the labor market which inevitably hurt those unable to adapt. Yet, evidence on the detailed impacts of AI-induced automation on wages and employment across occupations is still limited, and policies aimed at supporting workers displaced by AI need more guidance. In this PhD project, I will provide new evidence of the impact of AI-induced automation on workers in France. The project will combine various data sources to identify how different jobs have evolved over time, what part of these evolutions can be attributed to AI, and how AI-induced changes have affected their wages and career paths. Having identified the profiles of workers who are most at risk of suffering from the introduction of AI, I will then evaluate which policies are most effective at helping displaced workers find employment again. This PhD project is closely aligned with national and international priorities and provides an original scientific contribution to a highly relevant societal issue. It will do so by providing new evidence on the positive and adverse effects of automation and will inform policymakers in the design of new public policies. Show less

I led a project assessing how far OECD countries are from reaching the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets for children and young people based on 57 indicators. I looked for indicators that we could include in the database and that are provided by international organizations (e.g. OECD, Eurostat, WHO, UNICEF, etc.) or international surveys such as Gallup World Poll and Health Behaviour in School-aged Children. When needed, I calculated my own indicators using international surveys (EU-SILC, Gallup World Poll and PIAAC). Once the database was established, I adapted the methodology developed by the OECD to assess the SDGs for society in general and I used it to evaluate the situation of children. A working paper, in English, will be published during the first quarter of 2018. I co-authored the chapter analyzing migrants’ well-being published in How’s Life 2017 (OECD report). I was responsible for the statistical part of the chapter. I refined the OECD Well-Being Framework to fit with the migrants’ situation. I generated a wide number of indicators based on international surveys (Gallup World Poll, EU-SILC, EU-LFS, General Social surveys, PIAAC and European Working Condition Survey). I then used advanced statistical techniques to assess the impact of migrants on the well-being of the native population and what migrants expect to gain when moving to a foreign country. I co-led the OECD task force advising the Slovenian government in the building of the new National Development Strategy for 2030 in line with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We organized several meetings and workshops, in Paris and in Ljubljana, with the Slovenian government to give them advice on how to define goals, develop a framework and fix targets. I wrote a guideline presenting criteria selections that the indicators included in the National Development Strategy should fill. I also wrote two reports outlining 50 indicator sheets. Show less

•Project leader - I wrote a report on poverty and social exclusion in France for the National Observatory on Poverty and Social Exclusion. I analyze how poverty and social exclusion have evolved over the past few decades in France and I assess the targets related to social exclusion set by EU countries for Strategy Europe 2020. - I wrote an annex attached to the report assessing the Tackling Poverty and Social Exclusion Action Plan. I present the evolution of poverty and social exclusion in France and four other major EU countries. - For a ministerial mission, I conducted research on Local Exchange Trading Systems users. I ran a survey and then analyzed the socioeconomic characteristics of LETS users, how their exchanges. •Policy recommendations - I was a member of the task force advising the French government on the choice of the new wealth indicators. We organized four meetings hosting over 50 experts, researchers and representatives from civil society and international organizations. - I co-authored a report analyzing the medical tourism market. I analyze France's strengths and weaknesses in this market. I make policy recommendations to increase the inflow of foreign-born patients to France. - I co-authored a report on big data and how it can be used to improve the action of public administration. •Statistical analysis - I led a project analyzing the evolution of the middle class in France and in the United States between 1996 and 2012. - I co-authored a report on the evolution of social spending since the economic crisis of 2008 among the EU countries. I generated for the first time an indicator of social investment. - I led a project analyzing the evolution of income inequalities in France. I use the decomposition of Gini to measure the effect of income subcategories and the Theil index to analyze the contribution of within-group and between-group inequality to the total inequality for different subpopulations. I worked on research project testing the pollution haven hypothesis following the establishment of the EU Emission Trading System (EU ETS). We studied whether the EU ETS changed the value chain of French firms by increasing their pollution-intensive intermediate consumption imports from countries with weaker environmental standards. I carried out three main tasks: 1) Reviewing literature: I read and summarized a large number of studies to present the data used, the strategies adopted to test the pollution haven hypothesis and the results obtained. 2) Building the database: I created a database at the firm level. This database links information on French firms provided by the Enquête sectorielle annuelle and Enquêtes annuelles d'entreprise surveys, with their imports and exports as recorded by the customs service. It also includes information on customs tariffs and data on contextual situation such as environmental policies applied by countries, economics and geographical information. 3) Econometric analysis: I applied several econometric models, including OLS, Fixed Effect model, Tobit model and Poisson regression, to test the pollution haven hypothesis. I produced an academic paper testing the theory of environmental justice for the Phoenix metropolitan area in Arizona. I contacted a research center that carried out a geocoded survey of people living in the Phoenix metropolitan area in order to gain access to their data. I calculated the distance between each respondent of the survey and the facilities listed in the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) Program provided by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. I ran different multilevel models in order to determine whether the distance from the facilities listed on the TRI depends on the socioeconomic characteristics of the respondents. I wrote an academic paper that I presented at the 19th Annual Conference of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists. Show less
