I teach Band for 5th - 8th graders. We have 4 bands, 5th grade, Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced. My 5th class is called 'the Wheel'. I get 35 6th graders every 9 weeks, and teach them a music appreciation type of class. This has turned out to be a very good recruiting tool for me. I was still OMEA IV band chairman for 2 years here. I have been judging for league H.S. festivals and for Music in the Parks in Washington. This is my 3rd year here now and I am finally feeling like this is a good position for me. I have been doing the brass section coaching for the Salem Youth Symphony 2 of my 3 years here. That has been a great outlet, to make very good music again. I have also resumed playing my Horn. I am a member of a Brass Quintet - The Salemtowne Brass - First performance will be April 20th. We were selected to play for the Ligonier Conference in Redmond Washington. The group prepared 40 songs from Gabrieli to our very fine in-house arranger, Ted Cory. The group consists of Jim Langford and Matthew Hodges on Trumpet, I am on Horn, Ted Cory on Trombone/Euphonium, and Sean Turner on Tuba. Show less

I taught here for 6 years. Directed the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Marching Band, Pep Bands, 5th grade band. While I was there we had the largest small ensemble program in Salem/Keizer schools. We qualified for the State Festival with the Wind Ensemble each year. Our drum majors won top drum major awards each year - we were blessed with a fine program. I was elected President of OBDA, and was the chairman for the All-State band. Also the band chair for OMEA District IV for several years. I have continued judging for Music in the Parks in Washington. Show less

High School Band Director - Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Marching Band, 9th Grade Band. While I was there we had our top two H.S. bands get a I at the State Competition. We had a large small ensemble program, 8 - 10 ensembles, and a very large contingent of soloists that qualified for state every year. In 1999 - 2000, we had our Jazz Band and Wind Ensemble play for the KMEA Convention, we also took our top two Bands to North Texas State and play for a clinic there. Both bands played quite well. My first year in Buhler we had 8 people selected for the all-state bands, and my second year, we had 10. This is a fine band program. Show less

I was the Director of the Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Marching Band, Jazz Band and the pep bands. We had a large small ensemble program, 8 - 10 ensembles, and probably 10 - 15 soloists qualify for state every year. We qualified for state starting in 1978, and got I's the rest of the time. The program was not very good, but became one of the best in the State quickly. I was President of District III KMEA while I was there and very active in KBA as well. We received I ratings when we started going to the Neowallah Marching Festival in 1979. I judged the Nebraska, State indoor marching festival, as well as league festivals. I continued my coaching career here as I was the head-assistant coach for girls BB. Our varsity team went to the state tournament each year. Show less

This was my first teaching job fresh out of college. A very rural community, but the H.S. had 580 in it. This program was really down - the year before had received a IV at festival. We had 30 kids in the H.S. band that year and we were not very good. We got better and actually received a I rating at state. We started marching and I learned so much about teaching this year. While there, the program doubled in size - from 1973 on, we got II+'s at state. That was humbling. I was president of KMEA district II while here, and was part of a group of directors that started KBA. Met in the summer at KSU and got the ball rolling. It was a great addition to music ed. in the state of Kansas. I coached freshmen football for a year, and boys tennis for 2 years. Then the band program got busy. Show less
