David was an excellent editor who drew on his skills as a writer to assess and choose fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction for Quarterly West, a nationally distributed literary magazine published at the University of Utah. His tenure as editor saw the publication of many fine pieces of literature, and he carried on Quarterly West's tradition of presenting the finest in contemporary literature to the magazine's readers. He has a broad and eclectic knowledge of the landscape of contemporary literary writing.

I have known David Hawkins for over a decade at the University of Utah. Several years ago, the University Writing Program (UWP) hired me to teach Professional Writing both face-to-face and online after so many years away from it that the course number had since changed. David, who had been teaching it, out of the goodness in his heart met with me, answered my questions, and offered me access to his online classroom and course materials; I shamelessly cribbed off the work he’d put into designing and teaching this course, and he continued to be available and supportive until and beyond the time I felt confident running with it on my own. Later, when the UWP hired me to teach my first graduate-level course, Writing for Publication, David again enthusiastically shared with me the texts he’d been using in and his visions for the course. David Hawkins definitely has a way of making a student feel like a colleague and a colleague feel like a partner in learning and teaching. We are contemporaries, but I’m proud to (and often do) call him my mentor.
