After graduaing with my Masters degree from Heriot Watt University I joined Scott Hughes Design in Manchester where I worked mainly with the structures team but also helped out with the civils team when required. I mainly worked on scheme designs for a number of projects which involved using steel, timber and masonry. I helped out on some of the larger projects such as the new football stadium for FC Utd where I was responsible for looking at the retaining walls which formed the back of one of the stands. With the civils team, I was looking at doing some of the Flood Risk Assessments for the projects that I was working on. Show less

I first joined the newly formed Infrastructure team in the Glasgow office where I worked on many projects including: Aberdeen Schools, Cart Street, Maryhill Botony Estate, Libyan Universities, Childrens Discovery Centre in Damascus. My work mainly involved preparing the drainage designs including both the foul and storm water designs. I also covered some Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems such as filter trenches and retention ponds. Where it was required I also desnied retaining walls using reinforced concrete, masonry and gabion baskets. After a year I transferred permanently to the Structures team. Here I worked on Ravenscraig Sports Facility, where I redisgned the spine building which comprised of steel columns and composite beams. I also checked all the connection calculations for this part of the building. I also had input into the design of the Library of Birmingham project where I was charged with designing the stability cores. In addition to this I designed the reinforced concrete structure which was below ground. Again I looked at a number of different options which included 1-way spanning slabs supported by reinforced concrete beams, two-way spanning slabs and flat slabs all supproted on reinforced concrete columns. In carrying out this work I have become familiar with a number of computer packages and British Standard Codes of Practice inclulding programs such as ROBOT, AUTOCAD, TEDDS, QSE. Show less
