I had the pleasure of working with David at several stages of my professional career. Firstly, as a peer at RR Donnelley and Sons (RRD) where we both worked directly after graduating from James Madison University. Although we were in different departments and positions, our positions interacted often, and I had the opportunity to see his dynamic in action. He was a quick study and was recognized by the management team as having potential far beyond what was available in a manufacturing plant. Following his promotion into a Sales position within RRD in Chicago, he landed in a Senior position at Macmillan Computer Publishing (MCP). While at MCP, he recruited me (as a direct report) into a role heading up the Manufacturing, Inventory and Production department. It was in this role that I witnessed him as a successful leader. He demanded results and accountability at every turn – he was both strategic and tactical and was hands on in every aspect where he could add value to my decision making. It wasn’t until I was able to develop some of my own leadership skills that he provided the space needed. This was evidence of his desire to build a cohesive team, in a highly demanding area, where employee turnover was problematic. He was an inclusive manager, he communicated well to each of his reports, and most of all he was supportive of both me and my team. He fought for more resources where it was prudent to do so and created an environment of success that was respected those that worked underneath him. It was after he had been promoted again and I was no longer reporting to him that I had the benefit of seeing additional strengths. As a dynamic team member of the senior leadership team, David had skills that were sorely needed to complement the other professional leaders – he was able to operate effectively with extremely challenging personality types. His ability to see both the big picture as well as to visualize the tactical aspects of achieving the result made him more effective in his role. He proved himself to be a successful negotiator many times. His ability to smooth the roadblocks in a radically different way was recognized by all those around him.
