Intern placement as part of my master's degree programme. Here I am leading, developing and managing a research project in collaboration with RFUK and the University of Sheffield, exploring the reality of REDD+ initiatives for forest-based IPLCs in the DRC's rainforest. This is exploring issues surrounding FPIC, community engagement, the discourse surrounding REDD+, resource use, conflict, climate change, exclusion, human rights, land rights etc. I have been liaising with international partners, doing desk-based research, database creation and I am currently working to produce outputs from this research. At RFUK I have gained valuable experience and knowledge of working in an international development and NGO context. Using my initiative to explore job roles and responsibilities, learn about working with various donors and funding, involve myself in day-to-day activities and team meetings develop an understanding of organisational strategy and development. I am currently studying for a master's degree in MSc Environmental Change and International Development. Merging my background in environmentalism with social science, development and humanitarian issues is helping me understand the intricacies and nuances that surround some of the most important issues in the world today. This course has given me:1) A thorough theoretical understanding of issues such as: social justice, political ecology, extractivism, agriculture, systems thinking, interconnectedness, food security, managing climate change, capacity building, poverty alleviation etc. (taught by experts in these fields) and2) Experience of applying that understanding to practical and professionally-orientated practices such as: the design and management of research projects, the creation of policy briefs, tender applications, blog post writing, report writing etc. Show less

    • School Engagement Team - Geography Department, University of Sheffield
      • Sep 2022 - Jan 2023

Produced materials and delivered lesson plans to South Yorkshire college students and school pupils on international development topics such as food security and environmental issues. These lessons were designed to give participants a 'taster' of what it is like to study at the University of Sheffield and promoted seminar-style activities, critical thinking and group discussion. This was rewarding as participants were extremely engaged in what was essentially university curriculum, redesigned for and delivered to younger age-ranges. One student was so enthusiastic they asked to switch to their college's geography course! Teachers complimented our teaching methods and were enthusiastic to get us back. Show less

I thoroughly enjoyed every time I worked volunteering with the Learning and Discovery Team. I enjoyed helping with school visits and engaging with children of many ages, backgrounds and levels of knowledge. I have always found it very easy to work with children and I feel that the passion and enthusiasm I have for the natural world often spreads to them. It honestly gives me great joy to feel like I've helped to open someone's mind to things they may not have given much thought about to before. I hold strong beliefs about the importance of educating people (especially young people) about the planet they live on and their relationship to it. At the Learning and Discovery Centre I relished the opportunity to help do just that, while simultaneously enjoying the beautiful local landscapes. Show less

I worked at the South Yorkshire Energy Centre for my university's Professional Practice and Placement module. I learned a lot from working at SYEC. I learned about how such organisations are run, the relationships between various governmental and non-governmental organisations, the funding system for voluntary organisations and the role they play in both the local community and the wider framework. While working there I was involved in the day-to-day running of the visitor centre, community training schemes (aimed to help educate the public about the environment and how they could save money and stay healthy), working with Green Deal Management teams for client referrals, research responsibilities (in order to find current and relevant information for SYEC to pass on to the public and its clients) and helping the public with queries regarding the environment, renewable energy and how to save money. During much of this placement I was office-based, carrying out IT, organisational, database and administrational work. Show less
