My role was to befriend and listen to individuals who had come to the centre for temporary respite, feeling in immediate danger of acting on suicidal impulses or wishes. The job often involved actively caring for service users by cooking for them and performing other practical tasks. Mostly though, it consisted of listening and talking in a simply human and sympathetic way.
