I worked alongside Dave for 8 years at the State Journal, most of it reporting directly to him, including as his assistant design editor. In 24 years in this business, I have rarely worked alongside anybody who can match Dave's skill set. He was a key figure in our organization and earned respect throughout the building. His technical knowledge allowed him to be a critical liason to advertising, production and IT, and his extensive experience and talent in design (and redesign) brought the look of our paper to new heights, resulting in numerous awards for the paper as a whole and individual staff members guided by Dave. His steadfast advocacy for visuals in planning meetings challenged our editors and eventually led to an environment in which the discussion of visuals is the rule, not the exception. I most respect the fact that he never seems intimidated by a design challenge. Instead, he remains calm and looks at every challenge as an opportunity to prove the value of creative design, and the end result is always impressive. It seems to me that in an industry with sadly disappearing design resources, having a person with Dave's vast talent on board could not be more valuable, and he earns my highest recommendation.

I worked with David for several years putting together the front pages of the Detroit Free Press -- one of the most challenging, high-pressure and fun environments I've experienced in any newsroom. David's job was to design the front page. But his practice was to be fully engaged. He read the stories, worked with our photo editors and graphics editors in selecting the visuals and made suggestions on headlines. The Free Press at its best in those years was an amazingly creative and dynamic place, where people's ideas were judged by the merit of those ideas -- not by titles or offices. David was very much a part of that process. I enjoyed working with him then. I'd welcome the opportunity to do so again.
