For seven years, David served as a Principal and Director of Planning and Urban Design for GGLO. He focused on complex and contested design projects that ranged in scale from buildings to districts - working with public-private partnerships, outcome-based development codes, mobility infrastructure, and community stakeholders to create places that are highly sustainable, holistically planned, and cherished. Sought after as a conference presenter and co-author, David also spearheaded GGLO's Research Initiative, which published on topics related to urban policy, environmental performance, and the relationship between people and place.David's work at GGLO includes notable projects such as Seattle Housing Authority's Yesler Terrace Development Master Plan, Tacoma Housing Authority's Hillside Terrace Community Center, King County Housing Authority's Greenbridge, King County Youth Services Center Urban Design, Roosevelt Transit-Oriented Development, Capitol Hill EcoDistrict, and collaboration with the Seattle Office of Sustainability and Environment on the 2013 Seattle Climate Action Plan. David has spoken at Living Future, APA Cascadia, CNU, UX Week, and many local outreach alliances. Outside of GGLO, David is Chair of the Seattle Planning Commission and Co-Chair of the Seattle Light Rail Review Panel. He also serves on the board of the Seattle 2030 District.

      • May 2016 - Jul 2016

David developed and taught a six-week summer immersion studio for Washington State University graduate students in the fields of urban design, architecture, and construction. The course was co-taught with Alicia Daniels Uhlig, the Living Community Challenge and Policy Director at the Living Future Institute. The 2016 studio investigated the practical mechanics of city-making in Seattle's University District - amidst a wholesale legislative rezone, unprecedented regional population growth, and using the most stringent sustainability frameworks in practice, the Living Building Challenge. The goal was to allow students to explore, discover, and test the links between urban planning, zoning, and land use theory and the nuts and bolts realities of delivering deeply sustainable and equitable housing typologies in today’s real estate and construction market.
