I am currently employed as a Global Teaching Lecturer in Tokyo International University’s Global Teaching Institute. My responsibilities include providing instruction to our international students in the method, form and style of English for academic purposes; specifically, university-level essay writing and APA formatting. I am also tasked with educating our Japanese students in North American English pronunciation. Additionally, I am part of the Testing and Placement Committee, and as such, am involved in offering workshops on tactics and strategies to improve students’ scores on the TOEIC and IELTS exams. I was employed at Amazon Vancouver's head office to reduce the accents and improve the intelligibility, pronunciation and fluency of Amazon's international employees, as well as the written email English of their more proficient personnel. Amazon Vancouver is predominantly staffed by engineers and technicians born outside of Canada, and I was hired to refine their communicative abilities using the specialized pronunciation skills and techniques learned during my MA work. I also instructed a select class of students to pass the IELTS examination with a 7.0 band score or higher, with specific focus on the speaking and writing portions of the exam. Show less

After the conclusion of my MA TESOL coursework at Trinity Western University, I was assigned a practicum placement at the University of the Fraser Valley, where I assisted the main course instructor with an Advanced Writing and Grammar class comprised of 23 international students from China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, India, and the Philippines. My internship involved 30+ hours of teaching the class the rudiments of academic essay construction to a native Canadian university level standard. Throughout the duration of the internship I received exceptional reviews and enhanced my classroom presence, teaching beliefs and knowledge of the complexities of English grammar. Show less

After stellar student reviews at Coca Cola Japan, I was chosen to conduct a pilot English program at the cloud-computing firm Salesforce. Sent alone, I was responsible for the creation of the trial curriculum, assessment of 100 select students, and the teaching of six one-hour classes a day, covering topics such as western business practices, professional e-mail writing, tele-conferencing and conference etiquette. The 3-month trial was a success. I received exemplary reviews from the participating students, winning a yearlong contract with Salesforce for my company, Ten-nine Communications. Show less

ESL Director

Aug 2008 - Jul 2010
I was given the role of building and implementing an ESL program for IKEA employees for whom English was a non-native language. I designed the program to focus on the core issues plaguing the students; namely, the difficulty they were having when communicating with customers and colleagues in English in their real-life jobs at IKEA. Therefore, the lessons were heavily task-based, and intended to recreate the roles of day-to-day work life, to help them become comfortable and familiar with the English common to such scenarios.
