At Timeart, an extra-curricular school that was established in the early 1990s in Pudong, Shanghai to provide dance education, English was a new venture. I was privileged to head up this venture. Our department was small, having only being established in mid-2014, but within two years, it had achieved steady growth, with our specially designed courses receiving positive feedback from parents and students alike. Most of my energies were focused on establishing a workable, targeted and localized phonics-based curriculum, with a view to complementing strengthening prior knowledge acquired through English classes in the public education system. I had a small team of two working with me, both of whom are experienced professionals in the field of education.This experience inspired me to pursue further education qualifications.

I taught two international classes and two local classes, two at lower kindergarten level (ages 4-5) and two at upper kindergarten level (ages 5-6) respectively. In my role of teacher, my main task was to teach a wide range of subjects in the English-language medium, including science, English language and mathematics. The York method incorporated phonics with IPA recognition. I was grateful to be able to learn IPA in this position alongside my students. Students were rigorously inducted into this way of learning, with excellent results. Pastoral wellbeing of my students was also another area of concern, and I worked to ensure that any social problems they may have encountered were dealt with in a mature and reasonable way.

I was responsible for providing a language model for young students who had not previously had exposure to English. I achieved this through storytelling, song and engaging with students through play and modelling of social ettiquette, as well as practicing practical life skills.
