Enthusiastic and passionate about our organization, Dave was very easy to work for. He communicated clearly, had respect for my work and position, listened carefully, and encouraged me to stretch my wings. He was extremely well-organized; thoughtful and creative about grant research and writing; and determined to work with board, staff, volunteers, and donors for the betterment of the Society.

Founded in 1952, the mission of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is to inspire people to live in harmony with the natural world by fostering love, appreciation, and understanding of the Sonoran Desert. One of the top 10 museums in the country, with 400K annual visitors, it offers a fusion experience: zoo, botanical garden, art gallery, natural history museum, and aquarium. I was responsible for institutional leadership, philanthropic planning, and coordination and implementation of all fundraising activities. My accomplishments included: • Authoring and executing the Museum’s first annual philanthropy and development plan. • Writing and monitoring development budgets; initiating strategy to build reserves and endowments by not depending on revenues from wills and estates to balance the operating budget. • Revising and updating gift acceptance policy and procedures. • Organizing the annual Desert Gala (~500 attendees); cultivating and securing sponsors and underwriters; acquiring live and silent auction items. • Planning and developing planned giving program; in first half of fiscal 2020, $1.6 million in incoming wills and bequests. • Organizing major donor/giving program; identifing, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding a personal portfolio of 120 major donors. • Improving direct appeals, developing annual plan and increasing to four appeals per year, each to 30K households and businesses; standardizing format and layout; integrating e-communications; coordinating design and layout with graphics team. • Transforming donor stewardship program, reducing “thank you” letter and tax-receipt turnaround to two days; signing and personalizing every thank you letter; instituting practice of making acknowledgement calls and sending handwritten thank you cards. • Devising and launching tribute program, included named benches and trees. • Overseeing cleanup and conversion of donor database management system to Raiser’s Edge NXT.

Founded in 1983, Oregon College of Oriental Medicine transforms health care by educating highly skilled and compassionate practitioners, providing exemplary patient care, and engaging in innovative research within a community of service and healing. OCOM's primary activities are providing studies for specialized graduate degrees; running two teaching clinics, providing affordable care for patients and hands-on experience for student interns; and conducting acupuncture and Chinese medicine research. As Chief Development Officer, my mission was to build a culture of philanthropy to help support the College and those it served. I did so by establishing and enhancing relationships with individuals, businesses, special events ("Cherry Blossom Gala"), foundations, and partner organizations, thereby raising needed program, project, and operating funds.
