Throughout my 8 year tenure at Meridian, I dealt with Dave on many levels - however it was leading the Retail Commercial Team through a time of great transformation in the organisation where his qualities shone through strongest. Complex financial reporting and forecasting was asutely communicated to a large retail audience regularly, and his positive energetic attitude, especially in times of great pressure, was infectious. Dave would be an asset to any organisation - I enjoyed immensly working with him in Meridian Retail.

Dave is an excellent colleague and I have enjoyed working with him for the past 3 years. Dave takes a solid analytical approach to his work considering all aspects of the business as he considers the financial implications of strategy execution. His approach to finance is built upon firm commercial experience and discipline and I respect his judgment and advice when needed. I would gladly recommend Dave to any future employer and look forward to working with him again in the future.

A contract role working on business improvement initiatives following rapid regulatory change. Given time imperatives, I needed to listen well, think through the issues, and harness internal expertise to solve problems and strengthen stakeholder relationships - and all at a time when Covid hit! • CFO at CargoChain and Jade Logistics
    • Christchurch, New Zealand
    • Commercial Manager (and CFO)
      • May 2018 - Nov 2019

I was brought on board as CFO of CargoChain and supported the CEO in a process to raise capital raising through an innovative ICO, and then subsequently seeking investment through the issue of shares. This was an exciting start up time period, despite problems securing funders in the short time frames. With a shift in strategy, my attention moved to focusing on the parent company Jade Logistics and managing its finances, assisting with seeking investors for that company, sorting through the historic issues related to a material key supplier, and transitioning a shared service arrangement in house from third party provider.

  • Otakaro Limited
    • Christchurch
    • General Manager Corporate Services (and CFO)
      • May 2016 - May 2018

I led a project team to establish Otakaro’s business infrastructure over a 14 week period. This enabled the organisation to take over major infrastructure projects from CERA. This was a remarkable project to complete everything from finding building space, creating an IT environment, and recruiting initial staff to be ready day 1 to maintain project momentum for the infrastructure projects. Following a successful business establishment project, I was recruited to a permanent role to lead Health and Safety, Finance, HR, IT, and Risk and Assurance functions. Alongside the others in the leadership team, we successfully developed a strong Safety and Wellness culture, and this had the effect of building a fabulous wider culture which continues to exist today. In this role, I worked alongside the CEO (and wider leadership team) to ensure an effective Board/Management relationship.

    • Chief Financial Officer
      • Jan 2012 - Apr 2016

Following the Christchurch earthquakes, my CFO role required me to come up to speed quickly with machinery of government dynamics, in order to ensure CERA’s activities were funded. In addition, in a fast moving but short term entity, I needed to ensure the control environment was appropriate, and continued to develop alongside a changing organisation. My role broadened considerably as I took on responsibility for the risk and assurance function, programme management, large scale debt recovery, and working with multi national insurers to recover insurance proceeds for properties purchased by the Crown. As the organisation developed further and began planning and delivering large scale infrastructure build projects, I was seconded to establish a specific programme management office to coordinate and monitor the delivery of these projects. At all times in this role, I maintained close (daily)relationships with Treasury. Relationships with other agencies included Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Ministry of Social Development, MBIE, NZ Police and SFO.

      • May 2010 - Dec 2011

Working in a world class sports and entertainment organisation, I gave executive leadership to the development of the organisations’ strategy, supported the CEO in enhancing the relationship with the Players Association, and helped the Finance team believe in themselves to be more efficient and understand their customer needs. In addition, I developed a long-term funding arrangement with the organisations’ bankers, developed a fit for purpose Treasury function (particularly fx management), and supported the CEO working with the Board to navigate issues across grass roots and elite programmes.
