The School District had fallen, “victim to success.” They had far more volunteers than they could manage and deploy efficiently. Further, they had no computer staff resources. In light of their very limited budget, I proposed, architected, and developed a Volunteer Management System using Open Source technology. American Systems is a contractor providing IT services to the Department of Defense. I was Project Manager for the upgrade of the submarine fleet Transducer Database System used by the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, RI. Dramatic performance gains were achieved. While the details of my work remain subject to Non Disclosure Agreements, I can share that we were working toward making submarines invisible to enemies. At the same time my Engineering Co-op son, Andrew, was working with Lockheed on a project to find enemy submarines. The senior Lavers was hiding submarines and the junior Lavers was finding them. Invoices were paid for both sides of this “hide and seek”. Show less

My 7-year tenure at Microsoft was based on a series of 90-day contracts each requiring approval at the 200 reports, Director level. My responsibilities ranged from Database Administration, to Production Management, to Project Management. I have met both past presidents, Bill Gates and Steve Balmer and worked with Mr. Balmer at Microsoft’s Executive Briefing Center. Encouraged by me, my younger son, Andrew, enjoyed a 3-year stint as a Software Engineer at Microsoft, also in Redmond, WA. They don’t fall far from the tree. Show less
