From that small, start up organization where you did almost everything, to the current large matrix based organization Esurance is today at $1.5B premium. Managing everything from a complete program shut down to hyper growth and new product design and roll out. Exciting challenges around figuring out how to do things that others in the industry had not tried, to common management operational issues around expense and resource allocation decisions. Continually thinking about how to take expense and customer pain points out of the process and interact when and how the consumer wishes to engage. Some of the broad role titles which cover some of the responsibilities include Product Management- designing and rolling out new product, P&L, competitor intelligence, compliance, and government regulation lobby work. Underwriting- lead corporate underwriting strategy including best practices, quality and customer experience, rate accuracy, regulatory compliance, and analytics around results. Discovery- responsible for identifying, acquiring, integration and application, and pricing for third party data. Implementation- run the Project Office for Product and Insurance Operations which includes IT resource allocation, project management staff, QA and defect resolution. Although there were lots of interesting projects created along the way such as designing and launching the telematics rating program at Esurance, the most rewarding work was around building and developing great teams; watching direct reports take on new challenges and move into pivotal key roles within the organization.
