I had the great pleasure of working with Darren from 2003 until 2016 when he decided to take on the new challenge and transfer to the UK. This was a great loss for me personally. It was also a great loss to the South African office. When Darren started at Computershare in 2003 I knew then that he was going to do great things. I can say I have watched and supported Darren as he progressed from those early days to become the Chief Operating Officer encouraging him to keep looking forward. He has led many different teams from small to very large, across technology and the business, and I can say with confidence that every member of staff he has had under his leadership is better off for it. Darren is a great leader; he has mentored a lot of people over the years, not least of which me. Darren was instrumental in my growth as a member of his team but also as a person. He guided me through many challenges, always there to provide support when it was needed but allowing me the space to grow. His wisdom was beyond his years. He was always keen to learn, and never stopped asking questions in order to improve his understanding of how things worked. He always encouraged his teams to keep learning, and to get involved. Our loss in South Africa was the UK offices gain; they gained a diligent, honourable and extremely capable member to their team, someone who will learn from those around him while leading by example. He will share his skills and go above and beyond what is asked of him. Darren isn’t just a great leader, but he has very good technical skills as well. His understanding of all our internally developed systems as well as our externally developed systems is very strong. He was very hands on as a leader but never lost touch technically, always keeping up to date with how things worked technically. Darren’s approach was simple make sure you look after your people and they will look after the business. He constantly encourages everybody to think outside the box in order to achieve their goals. In my personal opinion he thrives off a challenge he is driven and does his best work when you ask him to achieve difficult complex challenges knowing that you can leave him to get on with it. He will make a success of any position that he is in. I look forward to watching Darren in the next chapter of his career, where I have no doubt he will make a positive impact.
