As a Building/Civil Engineer within the Building Consultants Section at WSP Group plc, the majority of my experience was to project manage approximately fifty (of the sections two hundred) residential insurance projects (value of works up to £30K) at any one time. Each structure was investigated in terms of engineering and economics to ensure the solution was robust and acceptable to the Client. Remedial decisions regarding subsidence-related movement were based upon cost, constructability, time constraints and environmental considerations. Daily responsibilities/duties included the following: • Preparing and maintaining project quality plans. • Surveying residential structures. • Arranging and supervising specialist investigations, such as ground investigation, drainage and arboricultural surveys. • Considering the available evidence, I produced engineering and structural reports (incorporating budget estimations of recommended works). • Producing and checking structural design calculations. Design calculations undertaken included that for timber rafter and beams; steel lintel, beam and small structures; brickwork retaining walls and property alterations; and concrete underpinning. • Liaising with insurers, loss adjusters, Local Authorities and private clients on engineering matters. • Preparing Tenders, Contracts, Specifications and Schedule of works. • Acting in accordance with the Party Wall Act, CDM, and Building Regulations. • Ensuring all work was carried out under safe systems of work. • Contract Administration of construction works, including site meetings. • Addressing snagging works, payment for additional works and the extension of time claims. • Liaising with Contractors, issuing Instructions, agreeing accounts, and issuing practical completion and payment certificates. • Preparing engineering invoices for WSP work.
