Originally developed on Visual Basic at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in the early 1990s, the operation of the instrument had become limited since the software and control system could only execute on machines running Windows 98. The entire process of testing, debugging and implementing the new system and graphical user interface on LabVIEW was completed independently but with the oversight of a Mechanical Engineering professor from CSU Maritime Academy.
