The goal of the stage is to further develop my bachelor thesis project for the IfA Control Laboratory. In the project I developed a digital controller for a magnetic levitation device from Quanser. The device is used to levitate a steel ball with the magnetic field force generated by passing current through a coil. The system is divided in two subsystems: electrical and electro-mechanical. The electrical system generates a coil voltage depending on the desired coil current, while the electro-mechanical system generates a desired coil current depending on the desired ball position. A PI controller is designed for the electrical system, while a PIV with Feed-Forward is designed for the electro-mechanical system. The control is set up as a cascade control loop. For the digital controller an Arduino Mega 2560 microcontroller was chosen. A simulation is set up in Simulink and Matlab is used to plot the datas read from the Arduino. A signal conditioning was needed to map the signals into the desired voltage ranges, where circuits with inverting opamps are implemented on a plug-in breadboard. During the stage a PCB for these circuits is designed, a further controller for the experiment is developed such as an LQR controller and the whole experiment is set up as a control laboratory for bachelor students, whereby a student workbook is written.
