Primary accountability for commercial PV & ESS permitting and construction packages for work under contract. Baker Electric is a large privately owned regional union electrical contractor, with a dedicated Renewables team focused on commercial project development as EPC (32MWDC, 146 projects from 2015 - 2020). Baker is #6 on Solar Power World’s 2020 Top Solar Contractors list!I was one of four key hires in 2015 that improved the group performance from an unprofitable 11 project, 1.4MWDC year (2015) to higher volume and consistent profitability, most recently 2020 (32 projects, 7.5MWDC) and 2019 (31 projects, 6.1MWDC).I am also a Baker Leadership Development Program graduate (2017). FMI Corporation custom designed the ten month long program (seven classroom days) for a hand-picked, small group of existing and emerging leaders including VPs, Directors, Area General Foremen and Managers.Tasks and responsibilities:• Maximized in-house electrical engineering resources and outsourced projects as needed, with schedule being the primary driver• Wrote scope of work RFP documents and negotiated contracts for third party engineering (electrical, structural, geotech, architectural, civil, survey, landscape)• Primary engineer on highest complexity projects, engineering contributor on many projects, quality control on all projects• Prioritized construction support, promptly addressing field issues and updating documentation to minimize downtime• Provided mentorship and oversight for in-house engineering team, including bi-annual performance reviews, training & development plans• Led site feasibility audits just prior to final contract issuance to identify risks that might call for adjustment to price or terms• Developed tools and processes for presale engineering, balancing throughput against detail required for estimators to work efficiently• Senior engineering representation to clients, building department officials, subcontractors and vendors Show less

    • Director of PV Engineering & Project Management
      • Jan 2014 - Sep 2014

As the attention of the Engineering Director that hired me was refocused on developing multi-megawatt projects located outside of Hawaii, I was asked to assume responsibility for successful execution of all commercial PV projects “at home.”I pulled both PV engineering and project management comprehensively under my watch and quickly identified some pain points to address. In close collaboration with my COO, who was responsible for managing the increasing number of traditional electrical projects being booked as well as the entire field crew (among other things), we were able to become a more proactive organization and reduce the frequency of reacting to the unexpected. With a significant commercial PV project pipeline on the horizon, Photonworks hired me to provide PV and electrical engineering expertise as well as commercial PV project management. While directly engineering the commercial PV projects, I was also tasked with reducing the time required between contract and permit. I was successful through refining the company’s plan set content to reduce plan check comments, defining tools to speed up design calculations and drawing preparation, and improving processes to reduce time spent coordinating with our consulting EE and SE.In my capacity as Project Manager, I was responsible for three concurrent government jobs (combined 613kWDC/$2.8M) on which Photonworks was the PV subcontractor to Hawaii’s second largest general contractor, Nan, Inc. One of those three projects, the 484kW PV system for JPAC Headquarters on Hickam Air Force Base won an Associated Builders and Contractors Excellence in Construction award (2014). Show less

In this role, I was responsible for the full design cycle, from initial project concept through contract and up to engineered plan sets and permit submittals. I was tasked to ensure that preliminary designs were buildable and competitive, cost estimates and proposals were accurate, and construction plan sets could be permitted quickly and installed within budget. As our Partner Contractors and sales team gained more access to large projects, Project Development activity increased and proposals became more complex. Deliverables ranged from one-page quotes to 30+ page technical narratives with supporting production estimates, site plans, single line diagrams and PPA/lease terms. On the Engineering side, I prioritized the development of automated design tools, a CAD library and construction plan set format that our Partner Contractors could all be comfortable working with. I directly engineered over 2MW of commercial projects and oversaw an additional 8MW, including 2.5MW across seven California locations for a major big box retailer.Day-to-day responsibilities:• Technical leadership regarding PV design decisions, product specification, code and utility requirements and permitting issues• Complex and large project (300kW+) proposals• Final peer review of all engineered documents and bills of material• Coordination of third-party engineers• Evaluation of products being considered for the company’s preferred solutions portfolio• Manage Engineering and Project Development teams, their design methodologies and their best practices• Collaboration with Project Management, Purchasing and Executive Staff to continually improve both proposal and project execution processes in order to improve throughput and expand profit margins• Project engineering and site audits as schedules and resource limitations required Show less

    • Lead Project Developer

As the first hire dedicated to providing pre-sale PV system design and estimation to the iPower sales team, I built custom tools, proposal documents and workflows for myself that would become the foundation of iPower’s Project Development department. When the company introduced its collaborative Integrated Partner Program, which allows electrical contractors to enter their local solar market without increasing staff or making any significant capital investment, my responsibility expanded to include management of key EC accounts, training new team members, and keeping all stakeholders updated on approved equipment, incentives and public policy changes that would impact outgoing system proposals and sales efforts. Project type varied by Partner Contractor and included small, medium and large commercial, new construction, public works RFPs, airports, schools, hospitals, military, gas stations, farms, and residential. Project size ranged from 5kW to 1MW+ and were located throughout California, Colorado, Hawai’i, Iowa and Nevada.Day-to-day responsibilities:• Preliminary layout diagrams, mounting system specification & electrical system design• Preliminary system production estimation (kWh)• PV & electrical cost estimation ($)• Financial proposals including all available incentives• A-, E-, and S-sheet take-offs for RFPs and new construction prospects• Coordination with the Engineering and Project Management teams to align preliminary system designs with Engineering standards• Tools and material cost database maintenance• Regular technical sales support to partner contractors and in-house sales team Show less

    • PV Design Engineer
      • Mar 2008 - Jul 2008

Akeena provided me with my first job in the solar industry after I left Xilinx. It was here that I learned the fundamentals of real-world grid-tied PV design and installation. I engineered 42 residential PV systems in 33 jurisdictions across California, Colorado and New York totaling 200kWDC. The projects ranged in size from 1.53kWDC in Palm Springs to 9.18kWDC in Costa Mesa, and included pitched roof, flat roof (non-penetrating) and ground mounted applications. Before long I was asked to perform peer review plan checks to ensure compliance with all applicable codes, jurisdictional requirements and company standards. My stay with the company was brief but it taught me a lot about how a solar EPC company operates. Show less

    • IC Design Engineer, Advanced Products Division
      • Sep 2000 - Jan 2008

During my seven-plus years at Xilinx, my efforts centered on high-speed performance characterization and functional verification of the flagship Virtex family of FPGAs. I participated in four product line introductions with focus on the following cores for each family: • Virtex-II (0.15 micron): JTAG configuration • Virtex-II Pro (0.13 micron): LVDS high speed I/O standard & JTAG configuration • Virtex-4 (90 nanometer): BRAM & FIFO (Team Lead) • Virtex-5 (65 nanometer): DSP48E (Team Lead) In addition to test design and execution, I also designed seventeen printed circuit boards (PCBs) used for test, characterization, demonstration and design development. While most of the PCBs were for internal use only, the “CALINX” Development Board designed in 2002 was created for use by UC Berkeley’s Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences (EECS) students. Design documents for CALINX can be found online. Other roles included: • PCB design consultant to engineering groups at strategic customers (primarily regarding power integrity and signal integrity concerns) • Customer support issue resolution, typically related to BRAM and LVDS • FPGA Lab management and lab user support (assistant to Lab Manager) • PCB repair and modification Show less
