      • May 2019 - Jun 2019

At the start of the summer, I enrolled in an Experiential Learning Travel Seminar, Studying Natural Resource Controversies and Compromises in the Rocky Mountains and the Black Hills. In the Rockies, we examined the region's cultural, ecological, and geological frameworks along with environmental threats and resource allocation. In the Black Hills, we spoke with leaders at Pine Ridge Reservation and listened to the experiences of the Lakota people. We learned how this community manages economic hardships, and the challenges they face from discrimination and inequitable resource distribution. This experience crystallized my desire to pursue a career where I can solve the complex and vexing socio-environmental issues our society faces today. During this trip, we explored Rocky Mountain National Park, Wind Cave National Park, Devils Tower National Monument, Badlands National Park, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument, Custer State Park, the Black Hills, and various U.S. National Forests. Show less

As a team, we effectively responded to residential conflicts, crises, and emergencies round the clock. This included notifying relevant personnel, writing incident reports, and connecting residents with support. • Farm-to-School Garden Educator
      • Jan 2019 - May 2019

During my sophomore year, I took part in a semester-long internship with the National Farm-to-School Network. I served as a garden educator for a Life Skills class at Saegertown Elementary School. My role entailed writing curriculum, modifying existing curriculum, conducting classes, and keeping open communication with classroom staff. I engaged students in food, agriculture, and activity-based curriculum. My classes engaged students with all of their senses, sparking curiosity for exploring the activity at hand. Most of the lessons I created were tailored towards nutrition, as many children in Life Skills Classrooms have trouble maintaining nutritious diets and trying new foods. Outside of teaching, I immersed myself in studying social justice in classrooms, agricultural issues, environmental education philosophies, nutrition education philosophies, and environmental issues and resources in the communities we were serving. All of this made my experience creative, thoughtful, challenging, and incredibly rewarding. Show less
