On completion of the Geological Mapping works at HPC, remaining as a full time Kier employee I was transferred to the EKFB HS2 Joint Venture My responsibilities on the EKFB HS2 Joint Venture entail the collection of spatially located geological and geomorphological information, as exposed by the construction activities, using field techniques and remote sensing techniques to satisfy the requirements of the Client. This data is used to monitor commercial costs and to provide feedback to the design team to manage and mitigate design assumptions. My role includes the production of methods, standards and techniques for the recording and storage of geological and geomorphological data prior to the collection process, the production of detailed schedules of geological record collection work and management of the geological team. I also aid in the planning, organising, and undertaking of field work to fulfil the requirements of the JV and Client. Additionally, I provide advice and information to the JV on geological related issues where appropriate or advise on the supply of external specialist geological knowledge, liaising with construction engineers, consultants, contractors and geotechnical engineers.

My responsibilities included site management, ranging from the supervision of singular drilling rigs, to managing and supervising multiple rigs, technicians, ecologists, archaeologists and a variety of on site staff, both internal and subcontracted. Geologically I was responsible for logging soil and rock to BS 5930:2015 including detailed descriptions of various geological strata, description of rocks, fracture logging, the logging of chalk (CIRIA), analysing in-situ and drilling induced features and providing a detailed geotechnical overview of various locations. I gained extensive experience with Cable and Percussive (Shell & Auger) drilling rigs, Comacchio drilling rigs, dynamic sampling/percussive rigs and rotary coring rigs. I also worked with sonic and wireline drilling rigs and frequently used JCB's and other mechanical excavators for trial pitting. When not on site I managed contracts, covering everything from planning GI's, guiding on-site staff from the office and post fieldwork report writing, lab scheduling and correlating lab and site data. I was also involved in project tendering and estimation when not busy with management or site work. I take an active interest health & safety, which is a subject I take very seriously. I endeavoured to maintain a high degree of health and safety at all times, always keeping in mind that a high standard needs to be well maintained and enforced, but also practical, which is not often the case in the engineering industry. I tended to be the primary contact between various Consulting Engineers, Clients and my own Contract Managers. I endeavoured to maintain a constant flow of information between all the interested parties to ensure that the progress of a job; both negative and positive, and geotechnical information is passed around efficiently.
