I study how Group A Streptococcus (GAS) interacts with its human host to cause disease. Specifically, my research focuses on how GAS uses the peptide toxin Streptolysin S (SLS) to promote cell death and damage the host. My work has demonstrated that SLS targets proteins involved in ion transport to induce inflammation and signaling events that lead to programmed cell death. Broadly, my motivation for research comes from a fascination with how hosts and pathogens function and interact with one another at the molecular level, and understanding how we can leverage that knowledge to improve human health on a global scale. In addition to my research, I am dedicated to training, teaching, and mentoring others, in both laboratory and classroom settings. This is evident in my roles as a Teaching Assistant, Instructor, Teaching Apprentice, and research mentor during my time at Notre Dame. I am eager to use these skills that I have developed to make an impact in my career as a microbiologist. Show less
