I worked with Daniel Hadley on two projects while I was ED of the Bronte Society/Bronte Parsonage Museum. The first was while I was applying to the Arts Council to have us admitted as an ACE National Portfolio Organisation. Daniel’s help with the strategic overview and plan was invaluable. He worked with the senior management team on the SWOT analysis and helped us all onto the same page in terms of our strategic vision, and we all learned from him. He helped us make the creative case for diversity (acknowledging the road we had to travel, given that the organisation wasn’t renowned for being diverse), and encouraged greater reach and depth in our audience development plans. He helped marshal our energy and ambition in relation to digital, and helped devise a rigorous approach to evaluation. He challenged us to be more ambitious without over-stretching ourselves. Daniel was also utterly crucial to the writing of the bid itself, helping give it shape and coherence, and was eminently practical and helpful with the supporting delivery plan. The result was a bid I was proud of and confident about submitting – I knew we had given it our best shot – and we were indeed NPO-funded. Daniel also undertook an evaluation of the Bronte Bicentennial Festival, during which he and I spent a useful (and really enjoyable) afternoon on a business planning model methodology to build on the strengths we had gained over the past four years and pave the way for our next five-year plan and NPO application. (Unfortunately this valuable work was subsumed by the Covid wave.) Working with Daniel is a delight. He is incisive, thorough, thoughtful, and utterly professional. He wears his considerable knowledge lightly while retaining authority, and he is generous with it. He’s the perfect critical friend. He challenges gently but convincingly, and is committed to the notion that while an organisation may be consulting him for his expertise and experience, at the end of the day we need to own and be comfortable with the outcome of our work with him. I would relish the opportunity to work with him again.

I worked with Daniel when he was commissioned to assist with the bid for Hull to become UK City of Culture. He is highly intelligent, knowledgeable and an absolute pleasure to work with. He offered his expertise to help me (I was writing it) without being at all pushy and his input was of real value. I would be very confident and happy to recommend him to others.
