Two business partners jointly own these three schools. Duties included planning lessons so that language goals could be met via the playing of games, working with the Chinese co-teacher to ensure that only English is spoken in the classroom, and occasionally marking students’ writing. At one of the schools, I had two regular classes of my own (once per week for 2 hours each) which were solely my responsibility to plan for and teach. It was a general skills course. Duties were similar to what was listed above, but I was also responsible for reviewing and testing the students both in a written and oral test. Reach High is mostly for middle and high school students who wish to increase their academic language ability. Occasionally, I was called on to tutor individual students who wished to study in high school or university abroad. I mostly taught them reading skills. Joy school is a highly successful chain based in Taiwan. They have their own textbooks and curriculum. The students here were mostly in Primary and Middle school. As of Nov 2012, I became their primary foreign teacher, teaching a variety of levels, but mostly focusing on the upper levels with students around the age of 9-14. There was a “Super Joy” class that I taught which focused on more academic work; I gave them weekly writing assignments to complete. Show less

    • Principal
      • Jul 2010 - Jul 2011

As the school was having problems hiring new staff and a new principal, I took over the job, despite having no experience. I took a three day training course on leadership during the summer and did one year, after which I was replaced by someone with more experience. My duties included many typical administrative duties (staff management, dealing with student behavioural issues, creating a class schedule, hiring staff, etc.), as well as several secretarial duties (record keeping, typing up parent communication, filing various forms with the Manitoba government) due to the lack of a secretary. We also had a completely new staff this year, so I had a lot of work to do helping them.Accomplishments while principal:• Oversaw the successful implementation the University of Winnipeg’s English Language Program curriculum across all grades and amongst different subjects like Canadian History and Language Arts.• Successful improvement of the Grade 10 program.• Creation of a “Project Class” for Grade 10, during which the students were able to use English to explore more creative and project-based assignments.• Successful overseeing and implementation of a Manitoba Phys Ed class for the first time in the school's history.• Successful implementation of computerized tracking system in our library.• Implementation of digital records of student behavioural issues. • Wider variety of and more frequent “activity nights”, during which students can practice their English with the teachers in a fun setting.• Successful implementation of a summertime University of Winnipeg program, during which our students traveled to Canada for one month in the summer to study English and live with a Canadian family. • Head of the English Language Department. • Teacher. Course taught: Grade 12 English Language Arts Comprehensive (2 sections). Show less
