Birmingham, United Kingdom This job involved a large scale interaction with the public, dealing with questions and any discrepancies on a daily basis. Every shift required a high interaction with colleagues to time manage pool rotations and general task management around the centre. I participated in regular team building exercises and staff training on a monthly basis to retain and build on problem solving and lifesaving skills.

Customer relationships are key to a business attaining performance objectives as the customer’s opinion is at the heart of any organisation. Every shift I interact with customer whether they are regulars or are trying the facilities out for the first time to ensure everyone in the centre has the best time possible. I recognise the importance of close and constant interactions with the public to continue their high opinion of the centre and solve any problem they encounter on the site. Show less

As well as the public’s safety I am responsible for the upkeep of my training to ensure I am able to deal with any situation that arises at work. This means staying proactive throughout my life by attending regular lifeguard training sessions and participating in team building exercises to remain updated with training changes and to cooperate with colleagues to work efficiently on every shift. My communication skills have vastly improved since working in a large scale leisure centre with hundreds of customers every day who come to me for help each and every shift. I realise the significance of communication with the public, my colleagues and my management team to have a clear understanding of all the processes occurring throughout the centre and the tasks I have been set. Time management is crucial in my job to keep the flow of events in the centre running smoothly on a daily basis. I have to balance pool rotations and activity set-ups into my other tasks set on the day to relieve colleagues of working on the pool and keeping the public satisfied with the events set up on time. As a lifeguard my responsibility is higher than many of my age with the safety of the public’s lives in my hands. To cope with this responsibility I ensure I do everything possible to prepare myself for when an emergency situation arises through regular training, keeping fit and being vigilant to activities around the centre. My adaptability skills have progressed since I had to deal with an emergency situation regarding the life of a member of public. I had to react quickly with my ability to work under pressure and secure the area, call for assistance and begin first aid procedures. Through my resilience and quick thinking I successfully dealt with the circumstance and the member of public survived with only minor injuries. Show less

My problem solving skills were put to the test when having to use cost analysis to decide on a project to use to expand the business with the highest benefits. I was able to bring a new perspective to the decision making progress making my contribution very useful to the management team. I benefited greatly from having a first-hand experience in a publicly run organisation and saw how a non-profit company operates on a daily basis. My ability to work in a fast paced environment progressed through my timescale of one week to present my findings on the possible projects to the Board of Directors with my chosen solution. My confidence and independence evolved over the week to allow me to successfully present my solution and answer questions at the end. I demonstrated my maturity throughout the week to professionally work in a demanding work environment. Show less
