GHR are a specialist housing advice Centre, independent of the local Council, which serves people living and working in Greenwich and the surrounding area. I am responsible for giving advice to members of the public in our drop-in sessions on a wide range of housing issues. This involves carrying out initial face-to-face interviews with clients, followed by offering them appropriate and dependable free legal advice. Dependent on the issue, this initial consultation may be where our involvement in the case ends, however there are occasions where their cases will go to court. I am subsequently also involved in the GHR duty advice scheme, which offers those without access to legal representation the opportunity to be represented by myself. This experience has given me invaluable hands-on experience in working directly with clients, and developed my communication skills, whilst allowing me to put the skills developed on the LPC to practical use. • Apr 2011 - Apr 2011

I used my initiative to make enquiries through my contacts on ‘linked-in’ (a social networking site for professionals), which, through a CV and covering letter application process, resulted in a week’s work-experience at Osborne Clarke, a top Lex 100 law firm. This proved highly beneficial as I was able to gain insight into a wide breadth of practise areas, including Intellectual Property, Employment, and the Corporate team. During the placement I was made to feel like an active member of the team, carrying out a wide variety of roles, from proof reading and drafting audit enquiry letters to carrying out extensive research for real clients. I carried out extensive research based tasks using a Trade mark database, PLC and Companies house, as well as phoning the TM and designs registration office of the EU. I was also able to take the opportunity to deliver important documentation to the Royal Courts of Justice and Grays Inn, as well as sit in on a conference call with members of the corporate team, taking notes of key information. It was therefore highly beneficial to be given so much responsibility, being able to deal with real life clients and carry out all tasks set in accordance with deadlines. I learnt a lot about certain formalities and procedures that must be followed at each stage of a transaction, which helped put things into perspective and gave me the opportunity to get ‘hands on’ involvement in different aspects of the firm. I received very positive feedback from my colleagues on the quality of my work, and subsequently welcomed back for further work-experience in the near future if desired and subject to authorization. • Vacation Scheme Placement
      • Jun 2010 - Jun 2010

Vacation Scheme placements are extremely competitive and difficult to obtain. In order to gain such a placement I completed numerous online applications, comprising of a broad range of questions, from my background, life experiences, qualifications, skills, to why I felt I deserved a placement over others. Paul Hastings received over 500 applications, from which only 50 or so were selected for interview. I successfully reached this stage of the application process. I was then subject to a panel interview, consisting of a Senior Associate, a Partner of the firm, and the HR. I conducted myself appropriately, answering all questions in depth, and demonstrated a strong skills base, both academic and extra-curricular. Consequently I was able to secure (one of the 8 available) Vacation Schemes to be carried out in August 2010. Show less

      • Mar 2010 - Mar 2010

I shadowed an Associate within the firm, carrying out office based tasks, such as compiling legal documents, creating legal indexes and sending email correspondence. I also sat alongside my trainer in the Royal Courts of Justice, acting as a scriber on a very high-profile case, (having featured in the news). My role was to take note of everything that was said within the court room by any of the parties involved, during the prosecution’s cross-examination process. My notes where then used for clarification, as it ensured DMH Stallard had hard proof of what the defendant had actually said. I got on well with everyone at the firm, including my personal trainer and the HR of DMH Stallard. I showed great enthusiasm throughout the placement, carrying out all tasks to the best of my ability. This experience broadened my understanding of the Court procedure, as well as the importance of maintaining high-standards of work. Show less

      • Sep 2009 - Sep 2009

I was seated in ICM department. I gained valuable insight into the logistics of a corporate law firm, & broadened my commercial awareness. I took part in a negotiation workshop, which was enjoyable and intellectually stimulating. It allowed me to understand the way alternate dispute resolution methods can be used to avoid court proceedings. I took everyone’s viewpoints into consideration and took charge where necessary, resulting in my team reaching a favourable outcome. I also gave a presentation to fellow colleagues and a Partner. I project my voice well, and engaged my audience through good eye contact and signalling methods. I got positive feedback from the Legal Partner and Graduate Recruitment Officer. Therefore this experience was highly valuable, and helped me to develop and improve important life skills. I learnt a lot from shadowing my trainer, picking up important legal terminology and understanding the processes required in order to meet client's demands. Presentations on pro-bono work, the HBOS deal and various other key areas of interest within the firm proved highly beneficial to me in understanding the sheer scale and expense of the work, and importance of maintaining a high standard and reputable image. • Work-experience Placement
      • May 2005 - May 2005

During this experience I was able to meet a variety of different people, each with their own particular role within the court. These included solicitors, Judges, bailiffs, the court manager and Barristers. While working there I was able to witness full court cases. My main role was to assist where possible and carry out mainly admin work, such as issuing court orders on the computer, black listing, writing and sending letters and filing as well as handling cash and cheques received through the post. Therefore i was seen as a responsible person, thus given an important role within the court. I also got on really well with all of the staff and enjoyed the experience, as well as learnt a great deal. This gave me insight into working in the legal profession and helped me to mature and prepare for the future as well as helping me to decide upon a chosen career path. Show less
