The research I conducted throughout my PhD centred around determining whether familial attachment (i.e. emotional bonds between parents and children) predicted the burden which adult children experience when caring for their older parents. The majority of my PhD research was conducted on the Families in Later Life Study (FILLS), a dyadic longitudinal study involving adult children caring for older parents. I assisted in managing the project, which included supervising honours students, and managing interns in completing various tasks, such as recruitment, participant coordination, and data entry. The project involved collecting survey data as well as conducting video recorded in-home interviews with parents and children. I was also involved in observationally coding these videos, and training others to score the videos using an observational coding scheme of which I led the development. While conducting my PhD research, I have attended five national and international conferences. Most notably, I presented some of my PhD work at the International Association for Relationship Research’s 2018 conference in Colorado, United States, which is the leading conference in my field. My work with Monash took place within the Monash Centre for Health Research and Implementation. During this time, I attended a camp program for Aboriginal youth living in out of home care. The goal of the camp was to improve their connection to their culture, and to establish positive eating and exercise habits. My role was to observe the youth for behaviour change which may indicate the success of the program, and to assist in preparing a report upon the conclusion of the camp.
