Becca Johnson

I worked with Dan as an Elon student in 2016–2017. Before knowing Dan personally, I saw him present as the Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life, arguably the most challenging job at the university. In the past, students dreaded attending mandatory safety trainings, most of which were repetitive and bereft of originality. Dan, however, changed the dynamic of these training sessions with strong presentation skills, quick wit, and relatability. He deliberately eschewed fear tactics, and instead acted as a friend or colleague giving us advice. This proved to be more efficacious than ever before. I later had the opportunity to work with Dan directly through the Center For Leadership. I approached Dan in 2016 to glean insight into inclusive attitudes within Fraternity and Sorority Life at Elon, particularly towards LGBTQ+ communities. Dan showed a genuine interest in improving diverse students’ experiences within the Greek system. Together, we created and refined survey questions that were later sent out to all students in Fraternity & Sorority Life. This was the first step in sparking conversation and building a more inclusive community. I admired his willingness to address difficult issues head-on with passion and tenacity, without fear of criticism or defeat. It is easy for people to claim that they want change to happen, but we rarely see them follow through the way that Dan does.

Helping people and organizations create environments to talk about vulnerability, authenticity and impostor syndrome, Dan uses real examples to build upon the foundations of relationships to help us all have the conversations that matter. Conversations on leadership, DEI, failure, masculinity, alcohol, consent, nothing is off limits when it comes to connecting on a relatable level. (Imagine Brene Brown and George Carlin had a child - that's his style and approach) Helping people and organizations create environments to talk about vulnerability, authenticity and impostor syndrome, Dan uses real examples to build upon the foundations of relationships to help us all have the conversations that matter.
