It has been an absolute pleasure working with Dane the last 4.5 years. He is very smart and understands the big picture business processes and objectives as well as the technical detail on the technology side. He is very good at translating business requirements into technology decisions and explaining technological concepts in language businesspeople can understand. Dane has an excellent grasp of and experience in modern architectures like cloud native systems, micro services, event based and distributed architectures. Combining this knowledge with his deep understanding of the SDLC and agile methodologies makes him a very good leader of technical teams. Dane worked in a client facing roles and managed the relationship well with clear and timely communication. (Both written and verbal) I would jump at the opportunity to work with Dane again.
Neil Bierbaum
Dane is the most competent "techie" I have worked with. He learned CakePHP in a few months to develop Bookpay, and it has run for years with no notable bugs. The quality of his work and his work style are exemplary, and he is a mature, organised human being as well. I strongly recommend him for any development or management role.

Senior Software Engineer, Solutions Architect, Digital Consultant

Oct 2016 - May 2021
I was part of the SprintHive digital consulting team for digital transformation and systems audit using cutting edge cloud tech and software engineering processes for several large financial services clients. I helped develop and deliver SprintHive's Customer-Driven, Lean, Agile and Software-Driven methodology to executive leadership and software teams, guiding them from pseudo-agile to fully cross-functional. I provided 2 years of Tech Lead and Solutions Architect professional services to clients, and some key account management and product ownership.I helped develop SprintHive’s Java & Python cloud microservices product suite: a powerful Digital Onboarding solution using an event-sourced, microservices architecture, ideal for omni-channel digital onboarding and flexible customer journeys. Next came specialist complementary SaaS services such as Automated Digital KYC and Income Verification, Document Processing, Classification and Fraud Detection that use Machine Learning and other data science. I was involved in technical pre-sales activities including responding to complex multi-million-Rand RFPs for some of the largest retail and retail financial groups in South Africa. These solutions are used by several financial services businesses and process tens of thousands of applications a month running on SprintHive’s opinionated cloud environment stack. SprintHive’s senior technical team, including ex-Amazon engineers and PhD data science talent, builds product as cloud microservices and has high DevOps automation, including fully-automated CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code with Kubernetes, centralised logging, metrics etc.Kotlin, Java, Python, Spring Framework, OpenAPI, Oauth2Kubernetes (Helm), Docker, Google (GKE, Storage, Vision, Natural Language), AWS (IAM, S3, Lambda, CodeCommit, Cognito, Rekognition, SES, SNS), Azure Cognitive ServicesEvent Sourcing, CQRS, RESTful JSON & SOAP, GrafanaMongoDB Atlas, Postgres, Prometheus, Elastic stack, Jenkins, LogDNA

Solutions Architect for this leading boutique skin-care distribution, marketing and training business.Worked with the parent company Union Swiss to do comprehensive research and preparation for launching a boutique, robust enterprise e-commerce store for Lipidol (lipidol.com). Integration with partner systems was investigated, from courier integration to secure payments. Met local e-commerce companies, local and international software houses and developed workflows. Explored popular e-commerce platforms. Learned Rails and Clojure fundamentals. High availability and support for up to 20,000 transactions a day was a requirement. Project was eventually cancelled due to change in distribution strategy.Refocused to architect and implement a comprehensive suite of extranet web applications in Rails to support and automate manual and semi-manual administrative and reporting tasks across the business, as well as give insight into operational aspects across sales channels and support forecasting. The system supports distributed users, internal and external. It provides tabular and graphical reports for management, database maintenance and mass email rollouts with responses, supporting document and video repositories. It has allowed the business to operate far more efficiently, reducing processes from days to minutes and hours.Set up an Ubuntu server for the system in both RackSpace and RSAWeb. Implemented RESTful integration between the extranet and SurveyGizmo. Developed an Android mobile survey application prototype. Developed a Java Swing client to integrate with the extranet's point of sale system to facilitate warehouse stock barcode scanning for orders across a range of pack sizes, shippers, pallets etc. with a USB scanner. This system processes thousands of orders. Set up BI dashboards on BIME integrating production database views.Ruby, Rails, Clojure, JavaScript, RESTUbuntu, MySQL, BIME

Table Mountain National Park Water Bodies Survey
-
Jun 2014 - Jul 2014
Implemented a small bespoke survey app for a friend's doctoral thesis in my spare time. This was a small system but hundreds of non-technical users completed the survey: it had to be simple and easy to use. Respondents rate water bodies on the TMNP by value according to 6 categories. On selection of a water body, the map pans to show it. It was deployed to a Heroku app server.Rails, MySQL, Heroku Implemented a small bespoke survey app for a friend's doctoral thesis in my spare time.
