Dan was a fantastic editor in that he was always a great listener. As well as directing us all and letting us know what he wanted, he also trusted us to deliver our own thoughts and ideas and act on them. This was a great risk for him because as Editor the success of the section was seen to be in his hands, therefore it was his responsibility to make sure it was a success. I believe his risk paid off because our section was the best it had ever been. The trust he showed in us allowed him to command the respect of the entire team, which in turn enabled us to run our section smoothly and without any glitches. I also believe that Dan's great leadership skills was what lead to us winning the Team of the Year Award at the Annual Media Awards hosted by our University. Dan is someone who appreciates everyone's opinion and creative output no matter how far it strays from his own tastes, and I think that that was one of the things that made him such a great editor.

Dan was an excellent editor with great leadership skills that led the Arts and Entertainment team to new heights. Under his guidance the section expanded and was recognised as The Media Team of the Year 2011 by the UPSU and the Pugwash News Team of the Year 2010/11. Without his creative input into the section innovative segments would never have been realised, from the voice and style of the reviews to brand new features. Not only was he able to organise the team into a superb workforce, but the copy that he wrote himself was some of the most insightful that the section produced.

      • Most senior role in the day-to-day running of the newspapers with wide-reaching responsibilities including management, administration, an element of human resources and keen editorial judgement. • Main responsibility is the management and leadership of a team of six staff over two offices– ensuring they were supported to achieve to the best of their abilities and learning which managerial approach worked best with distinct and conflicting personality traits – and taking editorial decisions to ensure the production of the best quality newspaper each and every week, all published within the boundaries of media law and ethics. • As well as leading the team, the role has also tested my skills in being part of the team too; taking on jobs normally reserved for reporters to alleviate pressure on my team as budget cuts meant the teams grew smaller in size and experience. This role effectively meant being the editor of the newspaper and so also involves liaising with other areas of the production of newspaper (sports desk, advertising, production team and so on) to ensure the paper got to press on time. • Post additionally involves managing reporter holidays, timesheets, being a ‘face’ for the organisation in the community, managing the newspapers’ websites and social media platforms and awareness of budgeting with regard to freelance cover. My first role in the marketing and communications sector with the primary role of acting as an account manager for one of the council's departments and so responsible for looking after the media interests of that department. Copywriting, social media savvy and proofreading are the three core skills for this role. Firstly, being able to write engaging and well-written press releases which convey the agreed media messages the council leadership seek to get across to be attractive to the media and the wider public. Secondly, interacting with stakeholders through social media to make them aware of the work of the council and its operations. These channels include but are not limited to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Thirdly, proofreading not only the communications messages I write but also those of colleagues in the communications department and from the account I manage to ensure principles of Plain English and good writing are adhered to. Other crucial skills include working within a team, a good knowledge of the council's content management systems and working with the media to answer queries. Show less

News Editor at the Slough & South Bucks and Royal Borough Observer newspapers, the Midweek Observer and The Villager. My first senior editorial role after graduating from trainee reporter and senior reporter with the respective newspapers which in turn was my first editorial role for a local newspaper. Initial role as a reporter included reporting on diary stories, off-diary stories events, political stories, council meetings and all manner of local news. Working in a relatively small team, teamwork and co-operation skills were vital to ensure the best possible results were achieved with stories often delivered as exclusives but also a capacity for breaking news. Role also required utilisation of multi-media skills as photos were needed to be taken on jobs as well as a keen knowledge of CMS systems to add content for web and social media awareness to drive visitors to the websites of the respective newspapers. Position of news editor was given after promotion and consisted of many of the same aspects as above but with copy editing, layout work, reporter management and mentoring roles. Was later made a head of content for the same newspapers which was, in essence, a de facto editor position, in charge of many aspects of the management of the newspaper, particularly in the absence of the editor-in-chief. This role required many of the same skills as the reporter and news editor posts (which I still maintained to an extent while also operating in the new post) with the additional responsibility of dealing with complaints made against the newspaper and individuals; acting as the public face of the organisation and the responsibilities that entails; and liaising with upper management of the organisation to ensure the newspapers were as best resourced at a time of cutting costs. Elected by fellow students that consisted of managing a team of writers and a team of sub-section editors for the Arts and Entertainment section. Focussed on managing and making new contacts in the music, film, television, theatre, comedy and gaming industries in order to boost the quality of content of the newspaper. Revolutionised the section towards utilising features, interviews and previews for content, in addition to reviews which resulted in the section winning the 'Best Team' awards at for both the newspaper and the entire University of Portsmouth Student Union's media. Organised regular meetings with the other editors and writers of the section, learned how to use Adobe InDesign to layout the newspaper and learned how to use the software for the website for uploading content regularly. September 2009- June 2011 Writer for student newspaper Pugwash News Contributed an average of eight articles a fortnight, consisting of up to 2000 words total, on a wide range of departments in the paper on a voluntary basis Specialised for the News section, both constructing stories based on own research and converting press releases. Usually focus on financial aspect of university, particularly the issue of student loans. Contributed to the Comment and Opinion section, contributing on a wide range of issues affecting solely students as well as wider political/social talking points. Vastly contributed to the Arts and Entertainment section, reviewing films, games, music but mostly concentrating on television. The newspaper did not have anyone reviewing television so I undertook the role and made it into a regular feature in every issue of the newspaper. Show less
